Sofia Coppola and long-reads: this is the RUSSH round-up

New Arsun Sorrenti, Behind the Scenes with Sofia Coppola and the runway return of Freja Beha Erichsen. This is what the RUSSH Editors have been sharing this week.

Ellen Presbury

Market & Beauty Director

I’ve moved on from scented candles, the heavily fragranced smell I find too heavy and lingering in a space. Beeswax candles though – another thing entirely. I found these on Instagram and the pure beeswax bowls are now proudly placed on my bookshelf. Extra points for filling my lounge room with a warm honey scent and a faint yellow glow.

If I am ever to receive an email from a friend to my work address it is only to share a link to the latest must-read. The most savage album review ever written? A broken engagement set against a research expedition in the golf coast of Texas, told with such beautiful restraint? The hilarious review of the wellness industry going too far? (Thank you, Victoria.) And if you don’t have friends that reliably email you weekly links, Longreads rounds up the best of what the internet has to offer. If you also have a crush on Timothée Chalamet then here is one to get you started.

Designer & Creative Services Manager

Every now and then I find a band or musician who I get really excited about, and my girl crush this month is Anna of the North. Her name is Anna Lotterud and she’s a Norwegian singer-songwriter living in Melbourne. ‘Thank Me Later is her newest single and I’ve been playing it on repeat.

If you haven’t heard of Tones and I yet then get ready to jump on the bandwagon. She’s playing at Oxford Arts Factory in Sydney next Sunday and Monday nights and tickets are only $28. Stella Donnelly’s Beware of the Dogs tour also kicks off this week, with dates running across September and October. She’s very Australian and very relatable without seeming like she’s even trying to be. I dare you to go see a show and not fall completely in love with her.

Fashion month is in full swing and the vibrancy and fun of the Spring Summer season never disappoints. I especially love the runway return of model and RUSSH Cover star Freja Beha Erichsen. From Burberry to Prada, I can only hope for more.

Film is a great obsession of mine, I love movies, actors, directors, stories, costume, fantasy – all of it. And leave it up to Idea Books to always put forward the greatest picture books, whether it be fashion portraits or, in this case, film. My current favourite is Set Pictures: Behind the scenes with Sofia Coppola by Andrew Durham. One of the greatest directors paired with the likes of Clooney and Murray. Yes please.

I’m currently obsessed with vintage books for finding inspiration. They’re like tiny time capsules where everything from the photography style, typefaces, colour schemes and chapter headings gives a hint to which era it belongs. A few months ago I discovered ‘Las Cruxes’ - an online store curated by Veronica Ortuño - selling a range of pre-loved art, design and lifestyle books. True treasures. With SS 20 shows flooding through our feeds and seeing the way in which colour was used so unapologetically in books of the 80s and 90s, I’m inspired to just go for it this summer.

I’m playing Gena Rose Bruce on repeat at the moment. Her voice is soulful and feather light at once, deftly woven amongst tales of heartache and longing. We captured Bruce in the lonely hours at Golden Age Cinema – watch the film here.

I am awestruck by the beauty and composition of Lisa Cooper's floral designs - beautiful stylings with lashings of drama. Exactly how I want my blooms.

Though it's hard to pinpoint the exact appeal of writer and chef Alison Roman, it might best be summed up as a woman in my age demographic making recipes that I want to be eating. Actually, that wasn't hard at all. One of my go-to food inspirations - her Instagram account is full of sexy looking dishes that don't feel overly laborious to make, and she's single-handedly brought the humble cannellini bean back onto my regular ingredient list.

My mind is blown with this latest – just in time for PFW - collaboration between Simon Porte Jacquemus and the iconic fashion haunt Caviar Kaspia. New to Galeries Lafayette, the restaurant is called Oursin, the French term for sea urchin, and resembles a coastal town on the Med, filled with art and market-find pottery and vases Jacquemus has personally collected. A menu by Erica Archambault (previously Clamato and Septime) brings everything we’ve just eaten on that long white-washed European vacation or the one we’re still lusting after.

So fall into my arms and release me from those dressed up to do me harm. Just as we’ve blown a sad kiss goodbye to our beloved David Berman (best known for Silver Jews), Arsun Sorrenti has released what I think is his best song yet - Dead Sixty Six - which definitely channels Berman’s emotional sensitivity in a way I haven’t heard for a while. “And then she broke my eyes with her tears.”

It’s a song about the pressure of the outer world on relationships and all that head-messing that orbits two people who are trying to figure out if their connection is real, or not. It’s a sad song that makes us really quite happy to be in love. Catch him on his current tour with Cat Power if you can.
