It's a full-circle moment for the ugly shoe trend. What once started as a humble Birkenstock revival has laid its head to rest, here, with clogs. Sparked by a bold move on Hermés' part by reintroducing them to the runway with the brand's viral Spring Summer 21 clog, and fanned by e-girls and boys across the internet somehow reviving the Croc (of all things), the clog trend is ablaze, and the 17th-century Dutch slip-on has been taking up more mental real-estate than we had bargained for in 2021.
You know them, your mother knows them, your high school art teacher knows them, Kate Moss knows them. The universal show is having a full-blown resurgence and we are enthusiastically on-board the train of the ultimate ugly shoe. So on board, that something as unsexy as the clog suddenly feels like one of the sexiest things we could adorn our feet with. Such is the power of the trend, it would seem, and anyway, we're well trained by the likes of Margiela, McQueen, Galliano, and more recently Gvasalia by now to appreciate clothing as an extension of culture and conversation rather than just something to flatter ones waistline.
If, like me, you've been thinking a whole lot about the ABBA-adjacent shoe trend, or you've just been led here by Questlove's iconic gold red carpet crocs, below are some of our favorite clogs to shop now.
A Cork and Calfskin match made in heaven.
The name says it all and the pony hair solidifies the sentiment. No getting past a classic albeit on-the-nose choice.
Puffy down meets ugly silhouette = all of our fashion dreams come true.
A personal favorite. The best part? It is able to dissolve and disintegrate over time if buried underground thanks to its Biodegradable Polymer base.
A subversive take on the classic silhouette that we are 100% on board for.
Gardening chic meets fashion girl, AKA the best of both worlds.
If you woke up today and chose comfort, the classic clog is the way to go. You must admit, there is something alluring here...
On a more luxury note. We'll be in touch in the future if there is a single silhouette Celine can't nail.
From the office to the backyard, anything is possible with these babies.
For the less active wearer.
For the maximalist.
For the love of studs.
