Robert Eggers’ new Viking revenge movie is in the works, and Björk is starring in it

A new, absolutely wild-sounding Viking revenge film titled The Northman is coming to us soon, courtesy of director Robert Eggers - the man who brought us The Lighthouse (2020) and The Witch (2015), two of the most witchy films of the past decade.

It sounds like it's all action, with Alexander Skarsgård playing the film’s lead protagonist - a Viking prince by the name of Amleth. Amleth is said to be on a mission to avenge his father’s death and will star alongside Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, and...drum roll...queen of the North herself, Björk! What a damn dream.

Set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century, The Northman was written by Eggers in collaboration with Icelandic writer Sjón, who happens to also be a long time collaborator with Björk, after working on various songs together like Cosmogony, Jóga and Oceania.

Like most other films that attempted to go into production in 2020, The Northman has experienced a number of delays in filming. The good news, is that it does have a premiere date of April 8, 2022, if all goes to plan.

“There’s a very small crew that is continuing to work on things,” Eggers told Film Independent in an interview. “Armor makers are working on armor for the characters. Prosthetics are being made. I’m doing my work with the DP [Jarin Blaschke] and the storyboard artist. There are things that need to be happening. Our location manager is constantly checking in on the locations, some of which are just now semi-built sets.”

According to Eggers, The Northman will be his most ambitious production to date. “The scale is so huge and there are so many more locations and things that I couldn’t do everything or know every prop myself. That’s been a challenge with the new movie.” He said.

There are no further details so far, but we'll keep you updated as things progress.
