Conversations with Friends’  Sasha Lane has today been announced as joining Tom Holland and Emmy Rossum in Apple’s new anthology series, The Crowded Room. Written and produced by A Beautiful Mind’s Akiva Goldsman, the stacked cast also includes Amanda Seyfried, Christopher Abbott and Emma Laird.

What is The Crowded Room about?

The Crowded Room explores inspirational stories of those who have previously struggled with mental illness and how they have overcome this adversity to live thriving, successful lives. A 10-episode series, it is based partially on Goldsman’s life alongside taking inspiration from Daniel Keyes’ biography, The Minds of Billy Milligan.

Holland – executively producing the series alongside Goldsman – is cast in the lead role of Danny Sullivan, loosely based on Milligan. Milligan was the first person acquitted of a crime due to multiple-personality disorder, now known as dissociative identity disorder. Lane portrays Ariana, Danny’s closest friend, whom together with him seeks revenge for their past hardships.

Abbot takes the role of Stan, Danny’s lawyer and a war veteran still processing trauma from the events of his life and Laird as Isabel, a high school friend of Danny who sees his potential and talent more intently than others. Rossum is cast as Danny’s mother and Amanda Seyfried as Rya, a clinical psychologist involved in the case, described as the most challenging of her career.

When is the series releasing?

While an official release date for the series is still to be confirmed, it is slated to premiere on Apple TV+ in 2023.

The Crowded Room is a co-production between Apple Studios and New Regency, with Goldsman producing under the banner of Weed Road Productions. Suzanne Heathcote, Alexandra Milchan, Michael Schaefer and Alexandra, Arnon and Yariv Milchan will all produce alongside Goldsman. Kornel Mundruczo has been assigned as director of the series.
