All the pieces the RUSSH editors are coveting for Autumn

autumn fashion

Changing of the seasons. A chance to revive our summer wardrobes - filled with flimsy fabrics and bikini ties - and build with forever pieces. As we prepare ourselves for the colder months, we're turning to the pieces we can rely upon time after time. Withstanding the weather and keeping us warm, this is what the RUSSH editors are coveting for our Autumn fashion round up.

For too long I have avoided weather-proofing my Winter wardrobe, leaving myself armed with nothing but a pocket sized umbrella and canvas sneakers on a rainy day. My resolution this new season is to introduce timeless Autumn-Winter friendly pieces to keep me warm (and dry) in the cooler months ahead.

Firstly, a pair of sheepskin Birkenstocks for the home and cashmere socks (in all the colours) to line sneakers and boots. I am dreaming about this ACNE tote that looks wonderfully water resistant but most importantly, I am on a mission to find the sturdiest umbrella I can get my hands on, because there is nothing chic about an inverted umbrella on a miserable, windy day.

While the cooler months are seldom my favourite, all would be well with this suede Khaite trench on my person. I'm a firm believer in the forever coat, and while this iteration is hardly weather-proof, it barely rains during Sydney winter anyway. Right?

Like most of us, a classic black boot is hard to turn down, especially if it means investing, and the R.M William Millicent Boot is a fresh, yet necessary addition to my collection. A cuban heel low enough for every day (trust, heels are not my forté), and a pointed toe pointy enough to mean business, there is no going past the craftsmanship of a classic.

Dressing for the cooler weather for me is all about trying to find things to suit my shape rather than following trends. I generally deteste oversized clothes as they make me feel like I’m wearing a tent - unfortunately, most of the nicer cool climate clothing is oversized. So finding the right pieces takes time and curation.

Fortunately I have a few go-to brands that I always know will fit. This cropped cardi is ridiculously flattering and is made from 100% cotton - no plastic. I love A brand jeans because this brand knows how to cut a flattering pair. I always feel good in them. This black pair will end up in high rotation. Of course autumn weather calls for a nice jacket and I am loving brown at the moment. This Michael Lo Sordo iteration is certainly my pick. And obviously, boots. I live in boots all year round, yes even in summer. I do not care what the trend of the moment is, I will always buy block heel chelsea in black. This Acne pair will blend with my existing collection nicely.

When it comes to dressing for the colder months I can’t say it makes me particularly excited. Layers make me claustrophobic and ruining my outfit with a mismatched jacket I’ve grabbed last minute while I run out the door is never ideal. The solution? Buying outerwear which looks as good as what’s underneath.

I’ve been lusting after this Mohair Coat for the past few months so will be promptly adding it to my purchase list now that it is finally weather appropriate. I also cannot get enough of this 80s inspired Faux Leather Trench, and will also happily take this Oversized Faux Leather Shirt (sorry Mia).

My favourite way to mark the new season is with an update to my accessories. An eye-catching handbag and pair of statement-making winter boots are crucial elements in my wardrobe during the cooler months. Especially on those days when it feels far too difficult to dress in anything but cosy loungewear and an oversized coat. This season, I’m focusing on practicality; ignoring my usual penchant for mini bags in favour of a bag that can carry it all. My pick of the bunch is this Fendi Peekaboo in grey flannel melange. The cosy finish feels very season-appropriate and wearable for everyday use. Particularly when I require two hands to hold my umbrella.

In the wise words of Nancy Sinatra, “these boots are made for walkin’” and frankly, comfort has never looked as good as it does in these Proenza Schouler Chelsea boots. The slim silhouette and chunky sole scream ‘wet weather, but make it chic’; which is essentially my entire approach to styling this season. The contrasting white stitching is also a nice touch – and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a sucker for detail.

Winter has always been my season. Whether it’s the freezing blizzards of New York or the calmer coolness that washes over Sydney, my wardrobe is always built for the cold. My approach in dress is one that’s always simple, every opportunity is to bring it back to building and investing only in timeless quality classics. A masculine trench, a leather jacket, a good knee high boot is all one really needs.

As we wind down and transition for the hibernation, the search to find the perfect staples starts again. This season I’m looking at the most perfect sheepskin by the classic Schott NYC, Mens leather aviator jacket by Bally, and pairing it down with a heeled Jil Sander loafer  and closed toe sandal.
