Everything we know about Paul Thomas Anderson's new film

Paul Thomas Anderson already has a stellar back catalogue of actors who have starred in his films – from the HAIM sisters, to Julianne Moore to Paul Dano and Daniel Day Lewis. The Boogie Nights and Magnolia director is not necessarily a director known for his blockbuster films, but the Oscar nominations for his most recent feature film Licorice Pizza, and rumblings about his next project – and the A-list actors like Leonardo DiCaprio on the call sheet for it – might just change that. Below, read everything we know so far about the new Paul Thomas Anderson film.

What is new Paul Thomas Anderson film about?

We aren't too sure just yet what the film is actually going to be about, as the film is currently untitled, and Warner Brothers are keeping the logline under wraps. What is known is that the film has a contemporary setting and will be filmed in California (the state where nearly all of Anderson’s movies have been set). The film will also be one of the most commercial and big-budget projects PTA has embarked upon. (Insiders are saying the budget is approaching the $100 million mark.)

Who is in the cast?

Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn are slated to star in the untitled project, as well as American actress Regina Hall. PTA has reportedly written the script for the project as well.

We'd love to see a few of PTA's usual go-to actors on the cast list as it's finalised – of course the HAIM sisters are frequent collaborators of his, as are John C. Riley and Joaquin Phoenix.

When will it be released?

The new Paul Thomas Anderson film is still in early stages of production, and is set to begin filming in California later this year. By our measure, we think it's unlikely we'll see this film in cinemas in 2024. But, perhaps we will see a full cinematic release in the early months of 2025? We'll keep you updated as we know more.
