Watch Genesis Owusu’s latest clip for ‘Don’t Need You’

Our favourite has returned. Delighting our senses with his latest single and video release for Don’t Need You.

It was only a year ago that new kid on the block, Genesis Owusu stole the stage with his surprise performance at our annual MBFWA celebration, the F*ck Fashion, Let’s Dance Party. What felt like a scene from an underground New York secret affair, it was only Genesis that could bring the entire crowd together, dancing and jumping in unison. Everyone wanted to be on stage, everyone was having a good time – a moment like no other.

Now returning with his first taste of new music for 2020, Don’t Need You is a step into the spotlight for the Canberra-based singer-songwriter who has taken full creative ownership in every aspect of his work. Having created all the imagery and artwork for the release, with each single art progressively making up part of the soon to be album cover and highly anticipated album.

"Don't Need You is an anthem of independence, a call to action to shed the grip of toxic places, spaces and faces."
Genesis Owusu

The track is a new world of confidence, falling under the outer reaches of the hip-hop spectrum with a jump groove beat and rich funk foundation. Letting go of all past struggles and self-doubt, Genesis Owusu breaks free and commands presence for Don’t Need You. With the sleek visuals to match, WUTD director, Bart Celestino brings the track to life. The clip mimics the confidence and energy of the lyrics while balancing the hard-hitting vocals and Owusu’s expressive sharp movements and defiant smile. Let’s not forget to mention the smooth tailored open suits and bandana wrapped face that Owusu dawns while atop a cliffs edge and industrial surroundings.
