Daniel Lee pays homage to Britain’s music scene for Burberry SS26

Few things feel as quintessentially British as Daniel Lee's Spring Summer 26 collection for Burberry. Housed in a tent at Kensington Palace’s Perks Field painted the colour of a summer sky, Lee's primary inspiration was Britain's eccentric music scene. This influence could be felt from the soundtrack – which pulsated with the beat of iconic Black Sabbath songs like N.I.B. and You Won’t Change Me – to the dirt runway, which models stomped down as though trekking through the muddy fields of Glastonbury Festival.

“Music is about self-expression, originality, and belonging,” Lee said in a statement about the collection. "From festivals and stadiums to open-air concerts, every summer the UK comes to life with style and sound.”

The pieces themselves were a melting pot of British iconography and musical subcultures, ranging from skinny scarves, crochet minis, and fringe galore which oozed the spirit of the 70s and 80s, to acid-washed denim jackets and tartan outerwear. Tailoring came deconstructed and playful – a Canadian tuxedo was styled with faded yellow, while a tiny hot-pink leather bomber was paired with a micro tie and skinnier pants.

Outerwear was, once again, a key focus for the brand, although Lee re-imagined classic codes with a forward-thinking lens. The classic trench, for example, came spliced with finely worked macramé, while raincoats were awash with vibrant checks. And in keeping with the theme of British summertime, these styles were crafted fr0m new waxed cotton and foil-coated fabrications designed to mimic the glisten of fresh rainfall. New season accessories were similarly geared towards the outdoors, from lace-up boots that practically beg to be test-driven at a music festival, to slouchy totes trimmed with exaggerated fringing.

As always, icons of the British fashion scene turned out in droves for a seat at the Burberry runway, which this year was afforded the coveted closing spot at London Fashion Week. Among them, Olivia Dean, Joanna Lumely, Alexa Chung, Gene Gallagher, and Jonathan Bailey all took their seats to catch a glimpse of Daniel Lee's magic.
