The New Year’s Eve outfits the ‘RUSSH’ editors are eyeing off this year

I won't bore you with commentary on how quickly this year has passed (like a bullet) or how right now is the perfect time to take stock (vegetable, please). Let's just skip right ahead to the part where we discuss the outfits we're wearing on New Year's Eve as though this is a friendly group chat. Naturally, your outfit depends on your plans. Are you committed to roughing it at a festival or have you scheduled a fridge-to-fridge with your closest pals? Is quiet drinks on a rooftop your thing? Or maybe you plan to purge the past year by sweating it out on the dancefloor. In any case, if you're in need of inspiration around what to wear on New Year's Eve, below the RUSSH editors share the outfits they're planning to ring in the New Year wearing.

New Year's Eve Outfit Ideas 2023

I’ve spent the last few New Year's Eves at my friend’s farm. Thus my outfits have very much consisted of muddy boots, shorts and bug spray. But this year, I am going to a party and I’m excited to get dressed up again.

I bought this Third Form slip last month and I think it’s a perfect New Year’s Eve dress. Since I’m not big on high heels, I picked up this strappy pair of By Malene Birger kitten heels at the Black Friday sales. They’ll be comfortable enough to wear all night. My Staud Mini Moon Bag will be coming with me, it’s a bit beat up but that’s just proof that it’s seen many good nights out. For jewellery, I’ll wear my plain Cartier chain, I don’t want to be weighed down by too much jewellery, it’s too hot.

As for beauty, I don’t wear foundation in summer. Other oily skin girls will know why. I’ll be doing my go-to summer look which is just CHANEL Les Beiges on the eyes – I have the Intense Palette – and my Flavedo & Albedo lip and cheek Dew Tint. Then whatever mascara I have open at the time.

Every year brings a different way to celebrate the New Year, but one piece you can’t go wrong with is a statement dress. I love the dresses from Realisation Par and will wear a style for New Year's Eve. Accessories can have a dramatic effect on the dress. Going to a farm? Pull on some boots. Going to dinner? Switch for a pair of heels. I’m currently still on the hunt for vintage CHANEL heels to go with my dress (I'm constantly updating The Millennial Decorators store). Maybe by some miracle I will win the lottery and then can afford the Bottega Veneta Andiamo bag to wear also.

As for makeup, I am in love with the Rose Inc tinted serum and I'll definitely be using that with the Westman Atelier concealer, contour stick and blush. With the flawless base completed, all that's left is the eyes. Smokey shimmer is my go-to. I use all four colours in the Charlotte Tilbury luxury palette, then smudge some black pencil eyeliner with a Q-tip.

My New Year's Eve plans are low-key this year, so I’m not going all out in terms of a ‘look’, but I still want to feel good heading into 2024… the right foot, you know? I’ll be up the coast by the beach, so a low-maintenance dress I can throw on over a bikini is key. I recently bought this Doen option and I think it’s perfect. I’ll be on the sand, so a flat is necessary… I wouldn’t mind these ones from The Row from Santa (if he’s listening). Otherwise I already own countless leather sandals – I reach for these black A.Emery ones multiple times a week. Beauty-wise, I’ll probably use my forever favourite CHANEL Water Tint to even out my skin tone, and a great cherry-tinted cream blush (I love this one from Westman Atelier). I’m also big on summer fragrance, Buly’s Triple Mexican Tuberose is my thing right now.

This new year, my plans are still TBC but what I do know is that I’ll be looking for a comfortable yet chic option. I’ve had my eye on a couple of Wynn Hamlyn dresses, and I'm tossing up between this colourful number or a slightly more neutral option. In terms of shoes, in an alternate universe where I can wear heels longer than 30 minutes, I would wear these amazing Christian Louboutin heels. But if we are realistic, my new years eves usually involve multiple kilometres of walking and lots of standing (and dancing), and so I’ll be needing a nice flat option like these A.Emery shoes. Imagine how cute this Celine mini bag could be to carry all the essentials?

My makeup routine this summer is sunscreen, CHANEL powder blush and Nars mascara, no matter the occasion or the time of day, so I'll be reusing this winning routine on New Year's Eve. Luckily my oily skin doubles as highlighter to catch the light – I can’t tell you how many times someone has asked me what highlighter I’m using at the end of a warm day, and it’s unfortunately just the in-built oil reserves.

Is it even New Year's if you’re not wearing something sparkly? As someone who will jump on any excuse to wear something shiny, New Year's Eve has always held a special place in my heart. I will admit I’ve become a little more practical in my old age, which means it also needs to be comfortable and versatile.

For me, this year it’s this Camilla and Marc beaded dress I’ve been obsessing over with either a slip or a one piece under it depending on my mood and where I end up. Simple is best when the dress is a statement piece, so I’ll be pairing it with this Remi Suede bag and these Los Cabos black flats as I’m quite tall. If I needed some additional height for the dress I would pick either these Dries Van Noten sculptural heels or these gold pumps if I’m feeling particularly extra. A pair of simple gold earrings and of course a glitter eye to finish off the look.

I am terrible at making New Year's Eve plans. I like to keep my options open, but this usually means I fail to lock anything in and get the worst FOMO when things fall apart last minute (as always tends to happen). On the off chance I have a glamorous party to attend, I would love to wear something sparkly and voluminous from Nicklas Skovgaard or Super Yaya. But I suspect I will be laying low this year, hanging on a friend's rooftop or watching the clock tick over with my family since my sister's birthday is on New Year's Day. In which case, I will be slightly crispy from a day at the beach, barefoot, with (I pray) a simple sheer dress like this one from Maryam Nassir Zadeh over the top of a swimsuit, and a piece of jewellery from Santangelo. Since it's a casual thing among friends, no makeup is necessary but a coat of Emma Lewisham's Illuminating Face & Body Oil wouldn't go amiss. Finish with a spritz of Le Labo Lys 41 to enter 2024 smelling fantastic.
