Following on from its iconic runway show (the season that fitted us out in all its militant glory), Burberry finally unveil its AW21 campaign. And of course, shot by none other than fashion duo Mert and Marcus with an intimate behind-the-scenes segment provided by photographer Chris Rhodes, a recent press release by Chief Creative Officer Riccardo Tisci bares all.
"This season is very much about freedom of expression and the importance of exploring creativity. And so, for the campaign, I really wanted to build on these notions and have the collection captured from two different creative perspectives. I collaborated with the incredible Katy England on the styling for the campaign to create a beautiful and powerful fluidity across both juxtaposing images, and I am so excited to have also worked with Mert and Marcus and Chris Rhodes to bring them to life through each of their unique lenses."
The whole campaign plays on contrast and opposing lenses. Starring some new and familiar faces including the notable one of Mariacarla Boscono, alongside Mona Tougaard and Nozomu Ito - the campaign sets to explore individualism and different freedoms, challenging thought and perceptions from different viewpoints.
Burberry's AW21 campaign poses both clean studio stills against candids from the runway show, a deliberate creative decision to challenge and rewrite the narratives and conventions behind fashion campaign and editorial norms. As a result the campaign delivers us something highly endearing, offering both a sense of exclusivity and voyeuristic behind-the-scenes intimacy pinned against the sensibilities of sophisticated luxury. A new and refreshing anarchic energy in the world of campaign imagery is born.
An all-star cast is followed by an all-star crew, with the campaign styled by Katy England and beauty by Burberry's Global Beauty Director Isamaya Ffrench.
