Believe Me: The Abduction of Lisa McVey

For a working professional, I spend far more time than I'd like to admit on Tik Tok. And while much of my scrolling time is consumed by adorable dog videos, advanced recipes I saw I will try but never do and fearless toddlers running into hard surfaces; every once in a while the algorithm serves me something actually newsworthy. Last week, it was the hot tip that our man Harry Styles is starting his own beauty brand. And most recently, the app has drawn my attention to a new Netflix film that the internet can't stop talking about; Believe Me: The Abduction of Lisa McVey.

As always, us Australians are late to the party; as the film was originally released in the US back in 2018. Based on the harrowing true story of Lisa McVey's 1984 abduction, the dramatic retelling is impossible to look away from. If like me, you're a fan of true crime and this film already has you hooked, below, you'll find everything you need to know about Netflix's Believe Me: The Abduction of Lisa McVey.

What is Believe Me: The Abduction of Lisa McVey about?

As was already mentioned, the film is based on the story of Lisa McVey; a 17-year-old Florida native who was abducted and sexually assaulted by one of Tampa Bay's most notorious serial killers, Bobby Joe Long. After 26 hours held captive, McVey manages to persuade her kidnapper to release her. Once she finally returns home and connects with a detective that actually believes her; they soon realise that the man who abducted her is the serial killer they have been looking for.

Who stars in the Netflix film?

If you're an avid Netflix watcher and are wondering why Canadian actor Katie Douglas, who portrays Lisa McVey, looks so familiar; it's probably because you have seen her in the hit coming-of-age series, Ginny & Georgia. Also joining the cast is Rossif Sutherland as Bobby Joe Long; David James Elliott as Sergeant Larry Pinkerton; and Amanda Arcuri as Lisa's sister, Lorrie.
