A24 and David Lowery’s new film ‘Mother Mary’ to star Michaela Coel and Anne Hathaway

American writer and director David Lowery is reuniting with acclaimed production studio A24 for their third film together, following in the footsteps of 2017's A Ghost Story and 2021's The Green Knight. Titled Mother Mary, the forthcoming production is slated to star Anne Hathaway, alongside Black Panther's Michaela Coel – which is basically as dreamy as it gets.

Both Hathaway and Coel have had a mammoth couple of years. Coel made history with her 2020 series I May Destroy You, becoming the first black woman to win for 'Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology series' at the Emmy Awards, while Hathaway has had something of a mid-career renaissance, reaching fashion icon status and featuring in the recent period psychological thriller film Eileen (based on writer Ottessa Moshfegh's book of the same name), which debuted at the recent Sundance Film Festival.

What do we know about Mother Mary so far?

The fictional melodrama - penned by Lowery and set to be filmed in Germany - will star Hathaway as a pop star who is navigating her relationship with a legendary fashion designer.

In order to create a film about pop music, Lowery and A24 had to enlist the help of some the genre's giants, by way of Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX. Both are set to create original music for Mother Mary, alongside Lowery's long-time collaborator, composer Daniel Hart.

By way of announcing her involvement in the film, Charli XCX posted this adorable photo to her Instagram.
