Calling all dedicated David Bowie fans (AKA, all of us). A series of original artworks for Bowie by Edward Bell have reportedly surfaced and are up for sale in an online auction.

They are part of Bell's personal collection, a series of works created after he was comissioned by Bowie to work on the cover art for his 1980 album, Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), including intimate polaroids, contact sheets, a bronze sculpture of Bowie, original designs, photographs, portraits, and sculptures. They will be sold via Halls Fine Art auction house and the Dory Gallery in the UK, and include original signatures and notes by Bowie himself. So if you somehow have cash to burn and want a hand-written note by one of the most androgynous musical legends of all time, call the bank!

After Bowie attended an exhibition of Bell's work in the 80s, he commissioned the artist to produce the album art for Scary Monsters, which lead him to form a long lasting creative relationship with Bowie, producing artworks for the musician into the 90s like Tin Machine II and Fashion.

“This is a one off piece that Edward created during the Tin Machine II album artwork process,” Halls Fine Art specialist Abigail Molenaar wrote in a statement posted to Instagram, “David Bowie purchased the original drawings of the bust for his own personal collection. A stunning and striking work, I love how the shadows highlight the piece and create an almost ethereal feel.”

Halls Fine Art’s auction, The David Bowie Collection of Artist Edward Bell, began on July 16 and will run through to August 1, 2021. The prices vary between a few hundred Pounds to figures around the £1,000 to £2,000 mark for the most desirable pieces. See a preview below, and find the entire collection up for auction via the Halls Fine Art website.
