‘The Social Network’ Part II is coming, with Aaron Sorkin at the helm

The Social Network Part II

It's been more than a decade since The Social Network cracked open the mythology of Silicon Valley and reshaped how we viewed the creation of Facebook. And now, it seems the story isn't entirely over, with a second instalment written and directed by Aaron Sorkin officially on the way. It's not being billed as a sequel, but instead will shift focus from the dorm-room beginnings of social media to the real-world consequences of its rise. Here's what you need to know.

Who is involved in The Social Network Part II?

Aaron Sorkin, who won an Oscar for writing the original The Social Network, is both writing and directing the sequel. This marks a shift from the first film, which was directed by David Fincher — who is not currently attached to the follow-up, with Sorkin apparently taking full creative control.

There's no confirmed word yet on casting, including whether Jesse Eisenberg would return as Mark Zuckerberg. In case you needed a refresher, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake were also attached to the original, though their involvement in part two remains to be seen.

What is it about?

This isn’t a continuation in the traditional sequel sense, with the new film set to examine Facebook’s transformation from a social network into one of the most powerful and controversial platforms in the world.

The script will reportedly draw heavily from The Facebook Files, a series of investigative reports by The Wall Street Journal back in 2011 that exposed internal documents and whistleblower testimony on the company’s practices.

It seems likely that the narrative might also focus on the platform's involvement in the events surrounding the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots. On an episode The Town podcast in 2024, Sorkin said explicitly: “I blame Facebook for January 6.” He chose not to elaborate on this statement, simply saying, “You’re going to need to buy a movie ticket.”

When will it be released?

There’s no confirmed release date just yet, but the project is in active development, so we would expect to see it in late 2026 at the earliest.

Until then, we’ll keep you updated as more information arises.
