Lin-Manuel Miranda is bringing more Broadway genius to our screens with his new film, ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’

Tick Tick Boom

As someone who immediately bought tickets to the Australian production of Hamilton and was eagerly awaiting the highly-anticipated release of In The Heights; you could say I'm somewhat of a Lin-Manuel Miranda fan. Growing up in a fairly creative and musical family; theatre productions, dance concerts and music concerts were regularly part of my weekend schedule. So, when Miranda came along and shook the old, tiresome Broadway scene up, you best believe the dance child in me was awoken once more. As if my heart need any more warming, the genius is back once more; this time, flaunting his creativity on screen in a new Netflix film titled, Tick, Tick... Boom!

Although Miranda already has several awards and accolades to his name, the film will mark his first directorial debut. Based on the iconic musical of the same name, written by Jonathan Larsen who was also the creative behind RentTick, Tick... Boom! follows a young Jon working tirelessly to break into the musical theatre industry.

Featuring an incredible cast and an equally moving storyline, this is one you don't want to miss. Everything you need to know about Tick, Tick... Boom! below.

What is Tick, Tick... Boom! about?

Based on the broadway musical of the same name, the film follows a young Jonathan Larsen as an aspiring songwriter who is fighting tooth and nail for his Broadway musical debut; all while trying to navigate surviving in New York during the 90s. With his 30th birthday looming on the horizon, Jon puts his efforts towards a new production, Superbia, while dealing with his girlfriend, Susan, and friend Michael, pulling him in different directions. Michael, the rational 'brain', wants Jon to prioritise financial security; pushing him to take up a job at a marketing firm with him. While Susan on the other hand, works to convince Jon to not give up on his Broadway dream.

If all those pressures weren't enough, he finds himself consumed by a constantly present ticking noise and the fear that some day soon, time will run out – hence the foreboding title.

Who has been cast in the film?

As with many of Netflix's recent projects, the cast of Tick, Tick... Boom! is certainly one of note. Andrew Garfield will take the leading role as Jon, a character that is loosely based on Larsen himself. Alongside him are the likes of Vanessa Hudgens, who portrays Karessa, a friend of Jon's and Alexandra Shipp, who plays his girlfriend, Susan.

We'll also see Robin de Jesus as Michael; Judith Light as Rosa Stevens; and Bradley Whitford as famed Broadway songwriter, Stephen Sondheim.

When can we watch Tick, Tick... Boom!?

Tick, Tick... Boom! is set to hit cinema screens later this year before heading to Netflix around spring time. In the meantime, we'll be watching the captivating trailer on repeat.
