‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ adaptation has locked in its first big name

Yet another of our favourite books is receiving the silver screen treatment. Sure, it's been several years since Netflix first announced it was working on an adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, but it seems like it might (finally) be taking shape.

Sure to be music to #booktok’s ears, the bestselling novel has secured a director in none other than Anna Kendrick. Here's everything we know.

Who is involved?

The latest — and arguably biggest — addition to the project is Kendrick, who returns to Netflix after the stellar success of her debut directorial work, Woman of the Hour. She's joined by producers Liza Chasin, Brad Mendelsohn, and David Hinojosa.

At this stage, those are the only names attached to the adaptation, but with a director finally locked in, surely a star-studded cast is the only logical next step?

What is the plot of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo?

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo tells the story of Hollywood actor Evelyn Hugo, determined to secure an A-List spot in the industry by doing whatever it takes to get there. While attempting to complete her rise to stardom, she marries seven husbands and outlives them all. Later in her life, Hugo then hires a lesser-known journalist to write her memoir and, for the first time in her decorated life, tells details and secrets about her love life leaving readers with no choice but to keep turning the pages.

Monique Grant – the journalist hired by Hugo – goes on her own journey while learning about the actress and as the book goes on, Grant seeks to discover why she was chosen to document Hugo’s life. The reason is later revealed, in a twist leaving readers on edge.

Much like Colleen Hoover’s It Starts with Us before it, Jenkins Reid’s book has gained a large following on TikTok due to the drama running through each chapter. It also discusses important social issues women faced during the time of Hugo’s quest for fame.

When can I stream the film in Australia?

A streaming date is still to be announced as the adaptation has only recently been confirmed by Netflix. Watch this space.
