There’s a ‘Princess Diaries’ sequel in the works

There are not many film sequels that could get me as excited as Princess Diaries 3. Let me explain. This is a film that IMO is amongst the best in the plethora of early 2000's romcoms. It has it all. Anne Hathaway as nepo baby Mia Thermopolis (that’s Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi), Julie Andrews as our literal queen, that dreamy light blue mustang chugging up San Francisco hills, THAT makeover scene. Need I go on?

Now, I will say that there has already been a sequel that came out in 2004, Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. This film didn't quite receive the cult classic status the first film garnered, but that staircase surfing scene was definitely a vibe. We're looking forward to seeing what's to come.

It's been 21 years since the original Princess Diaries film's theatrical release and now Disney+ will be re-entering the Genovian universe, according to the Hollywood reporter.

Who's in?

Directed by the late Garry Marshall and based on the novel by Meg Cabot, the third Princess Diaries film will no doubt feel a little different. Luckily though, there are a few familiar faces.

Although nothing has been contractually confirmed, our girl Hathaway seems more than interested in joining the cast. “I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it,” she told Entertainment Tonight recently.

Luckily for us, it seems she wants to drag Andrews along for the ride. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work.” She goes on, "We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen." Here's hoping.

There are some other key players from the original crew who are in. Martin Chase who produced the first two films is set to return. Aadrita Mukerji who worked on Supergirl, Reacher and Quantum Leap will pen the script.

Take a walk down memory lane and have a look at those Frida Kahlo brows while we wait for more updates. Thank us later.
