It’s the season of the witch, and trailer for the ‘Practical Magic’ sequel is here

A 'Practical Magic' sequel is coming

It might be 26 years old, but we're still thinking about Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in the 90s cult classic film Practical Magic. The witchy film about sisterhood, despite its initial panning by critics, still seems to resonate with fans all these years later. And supposedly, we're in The Year of The Witch anyway, so that bodes well for our trend predictions.

Excitingly for the film's devout fans, Warner Brother's confirmed some special news last year – that a sequel, Practical Magic 2, is officially on the way. Even more excitingly? The film's original stars are both making their silver-screen return. With an official trailer in our hands and a release date on the horizon, here's everything we know so far about the film, plot, cast and release date, below...

When will it be released?

We've finally got some answers. According to Warner Brothers, the Practical Magic sequel is headed for release on 18 September 2026. Both Bullock and Kidman leant their voices to a spooky release date announcement video, which you can watch below:

Who is involved?

We know that the original 1998 film's witchy leading duo – Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock – are both set to return to their characters. And outside of the leading ladies, six other actors have been added to the roster. They are Dianne West, Maisie Williams, Stockard Channing, Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod.

We also know that Joey King is locked in to the project.  Though she recently portrayed Kidman's on-screen daughter in A Family Affair, according to Variety, this time around she's set to play the daughter of Bullock's character.

Other actors locked in are Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, who will reprise their roles as Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny, the women who raised Sally and Gillian after their parents died. Also on board are Maisie Williams, Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod, although we don't know which characters they'll be portraying yet. We do know, however, that Susanne Bier is directing the film, from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the first movie.

What is it about?

The original Practical Magic film followed orphaned sister witches Sally (Bullock) and Gillian (Kidman) being raised by their aunts Francis (Stockard Channing) and Jet (Dianne Wiest). A curse placed on their bloodline leads to them to swear off magic in their adult lives, but some hairy situations lead them back to their craft.

The original film is based on the same-name book by Alice Hoffman, but the book is actually a part of a series: Practical Magic, The Rules of Magic, Magic Lessons, The Book of Magic. We think it's likely the Practical Magic sequel could follow the plot of some of Hoffman's follow-up books, but only time will tell.
