90s cult classic film lovers – you're in for a real treat. A new chapter is in the works for one of the most cherished romantic comedies of the 1990s. Sony Pictures has announced a sequel to My Best Friend’s Wedding, the 1997 hit that starred Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Dermot Mulroney. And the best part? The screenplay will be crafted by acclaimed filmmaker Celine Song. (Who you may know better for her award-winning work on Past Lives and the recent romantic comedy Materialists.)
Here's what we know so far about the film...
Song is directing, but who else is attached to the project?
While Song is confirmed as the screenwriter, she is not expected to direct the project. And as far as casting goes, there hasn't been much confirmed. However, given it's a sequel and not a remake, we're thinking (hoping, praying) Roberts, Diaz and Mulroney might be back as our main trio. Mulroney has also added to speculation with some recent comments to the press.
Lawyers are involved, so production could be imminent
Buzz around a sequel gained traction after Mulroney hinted at its possibility during a press tour for his Netflix series The Hunting Wives. When asked about the sequel, the actor said, “Last I heard, lawyers were talking,” though he emphasised he had no official involvement at the time.
Why was Song selected for the screenplay?
Song’s addition to the project brings a fresh creative voice. Her recent film Materialists, released by A24, featured stars like Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, and earned $50 million globally. And her debut, Past Lives, was both a critical and commercial success, securing Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
With Song at the helm of the script, we are expecting a sequel that both honours the original and explores new emotional territory.
What was the original film about?
The original My Best Friend’s Wedding, directed by P.J. Hogan, told the story of a woman realising she’s in love with her best friend just days before his wedding to another woman. The cast included Diaz and Rupert Everett, alongside Roberts and Mulroney.
It was both a critical darling and a box office smash, grossing $127 million in North America alone and securing several Golden Globe nominations. Variety even ranked it among its list of the 100 greatest films of all time.
When will it be released?
No release date has been announced yet.
