Your first look at Donald Glover in the ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ reboot

Mr. and Mrs. Smith reboot

Our unproblematic king, Donald Glover, granted us a huge treat in 2021 when he announced a reboot of one of the most iconic films of the early 2000s: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's sexy killer 2005 film, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. While there has been a few changes to the project since then – namely, the exit of Phoebe Waller-Bridge as co-lead and co-producer – we do have our first look at the reboot. Find that, and all the other details around the reimagined Mr. & Mrs. Smith, below.

Who is involved?

Maya Erskine has stepped into the title role in place of Waller-Bridge, who told Vanity Fair back in June her reasoning for leaving the series was down to a desire to not "get in the way of a vision". "I worked on that show for six months fully in heart and mind and really cared about it — still care about it,” she continued. “And I know it’s gonna be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party... Creative collaboration is like a marriage, and some marriages don’t work out.”

The series has also attracted the attention of Michaela Coel, who has signed onto the project, however in what capacity remains unknown. Joining Coel is Parker Posey, Paul Dano, Wagner Moura and John Turturro.

What is it about?

Although, at its core, the series will follow two spies who get married despite not knowing each other's true profession. However, we're told that the Mr. & Mrs Smith reboot will be tonally different to the source material. Hiro Murai, the Japanese filmmaker who directed the music video for Glover's This Is America is behind the first two episodes, if that offers any inkling of what to expect.

Is there a release date?

After a string of production delays, Prime Video has shared that the series will land on the streamer in early 2024.
