The idea of Mother's Day dates back to the early 1900's when American woman, Anna Jarvis, held a memorial service for her mother. Soon after, the day was recognised in both hemispheres.
The term 'Mother’s Day' is singular, and was originally meant to honour one person, as Jarvis put it – “the best mother who ever lived, yours”. And while we can all agree that this is true, there is also truth in the idea of extending the meaning of the day to Mothers’ Day, plural.
