A true bourgeois rebel comes to mind as we take our first glance at Max Mara for Spring Summer 2022. And if one was to be completely honest - a show full of flair reminiscent of the European summer soiree in Anthony Minghella's Talented Mr Ripley.
An opening look in full black sets the tone for the show, with Creative director Ian Griffiths taking us back to the wistful days of the Beat Generation. The Max Mara woman has been reimagined as a vacationing intellectual for this Spring Summer, taking flight to the imaginary summers of Françoise Sagan's film adaptation of Bonjour Tristesse as directed by Otto Preminger.
For Spring Summer, the Max Mara woman is highly intelligent but also, she's a little bored and remains unfazed by it all. Almost child-like in spirit and blissfully nonchalant - the collection composes the perfect orchestra of parasol stripe prints, summer bralette's and stomach baring midriffs with matching mini skirts.
We see Max Mara's signature camel make its eponymous return, sitting alongside soft hues in all neutral meshed against bursts of citrus colour. Luxe sportswear meets chic but utilitarian workwear with carpenter pants reimagined, boyish tank tops, boxed up mini dresses peppered with printed denim and threaded with feathers.
And the dream of travel has extended itself to accessories and Max Mara footwear. We see cross body bags slung across chests, the vacation duffel paired with strapped up leather sandals. Presenting the collection as memorable paraphernalia of a nostalgic European summer, Max Mara paves forward for new ways of thought claiming, "we’re all existentialists now".
