Margaret Qualley and Andie MacDowell share their first-ever mother-daughter on-screen moment in ‘Maid’

Maid Netflix

Mother-daughter moments are not uncommon in Hollywood. Many of our favourite actors have followed in the footsteps of their famous parents, and we would be lying if we said we didn't live for a family on-screen moments every once in a while. Margaret Qualley and her mother Andie MacDowell happen to be one of the famous families in question. But despite sharing countless red carpets over the years and sitting through endless interviews, the duo have never shared the screen – until now. Qualley and MacDowell are starring in the upcoming Netflix series, Maid; and it's clear that this union was worth the wait.

The 10-part series is an adaptation of Stephanie Land’s gripping 2019 memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay. In the story, Qualley portrays a young mother, and MacDowell her mother. As we can already see from the trailer, it definitely seems as though their relationship isn't on the best of terms.

Although MacDowell's character certainly plays a crucial part in the storyline, it's Qualley who steals the show. We can already tell that the Maid is going to be one of her best on screen appearances to date – the perfect concoction of heartbreak, triumph, aspiration and frustration.

The series was produced in conjunction with Margot Robbie's production company, LuckyChap Entertainment; so you know it's serious business. Watch the trailer and find everything you need to know about the new Netflix show, Maid, below.

What is Maid about?

Maid follows Alex Russell – a struggling single mum who works long hours cleaning houses to help support herself and her daughter. After leaving an abusive relationship with her ex-partner, her daughter and her work is all she has. But in-between the long and demanding hours, her mind turns to storytelling; the homes and lives of her rich clients serving as a source of inspiration for her short stories.

In the trailer alone, we hear Russell speak about a woman who lives in “the kind of house that’s on the cover of magazines, has a personal trainer, and a financial advisor, and spends entire Saturdays getting hot stone massages and reading her first edition books.” It's the life she dreams of despite it being far from her personal reality.

Who has been cast in the Netflix series?

Alongside Qualley, and MacDowell who plays Paula – an eccentric artist who has struggled to live a stable life – Nick Robinson also stars as Russell's ex-partner, Sean. Anika Noni Rose plays Regina; one of the many wealthy owners of the houses Qualley's character finds herself cleaning.

When will Maid premiere on Netflix?

The new series Maid is set to hit the streaming platform come October 1. Until then, you can watch the trailer below and even pick up the original memoir if you have the time.
