There is one outfit I would pick to sum up the spirit of Kristen Stewart's style, and it's a look that anyone who was sentient in the early 2000s will recognise – and very likely cringe at. I'm talking about a big tutu skirt and a busted-up pair of Converse All-Stars. (Why were we so obsessed?) Think Hilary Duff in The Perfect Man or perhaps more fittingly, Bella Swan attending her prom in Twilight.
The look, if you can call it that, captures the high-low of Stewart's personal style. On one hand, she's an ambassador for CHANEL, with a fashion repertoire that includes soft pink tweed skirt suits. Then again, Stewart plays by her own rules. In the past, she's cut her hair into mullets, cropped pixies and dyed it every colour imaginable. You're just as likely to catch her in CHANEL hot pants as you are a band tee, backwards cap, and skinny jeans. There's no formula, only what she feels like, and there's always a sense that the clothes are there to serve her, not the other way around.
It's an offhand approach we could all use a little more of. And together with the help of her longtime stylist Tara Swennen, the pair have pinned down a formula that works. Every red carpet Kristen Stewart appears on provides something unexpected. As the actor and director begins promoting her latest film Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, we're reminded of her individual approach to dressing. And if there's a lesson in this, it's that when we get dressed we don't owe anyone consistency.
