Musician Joy Crookes on her latest release and which oils are her secret to good hair

She’s been dubbed “the one to watch”, and for 21 year old, UK neo-soul musician Joy Crookes this certainly rings true. All flowing locks and doe eyes, we spoke to her on her beauty routine. But really, we could have talked endlessly on life, lyrics and love. Known for her soul baring lyrics and songs that hook you from the start we suggest you listen for yourself. Her words belie her years.

Set to perform in Australia for Splendour in the Grass (which all fingers crossed will still go ahead) we caught up with Crookes after the release of her latest single Anyone But Me, on finding normal in days that are never the same, the oils she swears by for healthy hair and why drug store products sometimes win.

What is your morning beauty routine?

I wash my face with Glossier or Ole Henriksen facial cleansers. Then apply double serum by Clarins followed either by their lotus oil or their face cream. I always moisturise my body.

What is your night beauty routine?

I apply double serum again by Clarins then their night cream. I love a good face mask too.

Describe what you do for a living? What does a typical day look like for you?

I’m a musician. A typical day looks like doing 104 things - such as filming, answering emails and definitely writing music.

What is the supermarket/ drug store/ chemist beauty product(s) that you use and love?

I always use Boots and Superdrug. I love a good Tescos/ Sainsburys/ co-op situation.

What is your main form of beauty body maintenance? What products do you use on your body?

I love body cream by Astral or Nivea. I use body cream so much that I always use an affordable brand.

How do you keep fit/ healthy? Does exercise form a large part of your routine?

Yes, I exercise more than 3 times a week. I do weight training and I try to eat as much home cooked food as possible.

What cosmetic procedures/ professional treatments do you have as part of your beauty routine?

I have a huge array of oil for my hair - I use argan, garlic and Castor oil in it a lot as I am prone to losing my hair from stress. I also take Biotin.

What do you do when your body needs to recover?

I sleep for ages.

You’re tired/ hungover/ rundown: what is your beauty hack?

Two bottles of lucozade sport (orange always) and if you can - have a pint of water and a pint of Berocca the night before you wake up to a hangover.

What is the one non-negotiable in your beauty routine?

Probably my hair products - especially my argan oil. I'd have crusty hair otherwise.

Do you have a beauty icon? Who are they and why?

Probably Frida Kahlo because she embraced real beauty and wasn't afraid too.
