Jonathan Saunders unveils new Japanese inspired furniture collection

Saunders

Better known and renown as a fashion designer, rather than in the world of interior or homewares; truth be told that for designer Jonathan Saunders, product design and furnitures came well before. After his extensive work as chief creative officer at Diane Von Furstenburg and creative director of his own fashion house, Jonathan Saunders - the Scottish designer, originally trained in furniture and product design, returned to his original mastery launching his new line under the name Saunders Studio last February 2020.

Now, the designer returns with his second collection in furniture, coming full circle with White, a collection of stools, screen printed room dividers and chairs all inspired by Japanese architecture and techniques.

According to Saunders new site, Saunders Studio, the collection explores "nature and geometry across metalwork and screen printing, Saunders revisits the shapes of his debut collection with an exploration of neutral colour and dying techniques. Pairing freehand screen printing processes with rigid metal forms, the collection captures the spontaneous and accidental bound within precise shapes."

Utilising unique techniques and adopting a breathtakingly new approach to furniture and design, the collection features cloudy resin tabletops, free hand ink poured flood screens and chairs available in Saunders signature textile dyes.

An emergence of classic Japanese architectural pieces and materials are seen reimagined into the modern and contemporary. The collection appears as the perfect union and cross section of where architecture and art meets fashion and textiles, drawing on Saunders unique eye for colour backdropped against different shades of opulent bone white.

Like couture, each piece of Saunders Studio furniture is made to order, using fabrications and artisans based in America. Following on from the studios success with Rhythms of Colour, the new collection sees familiar styles such as the Renfrew stool and the floor chair reinterpreted with slight tweaks and new colour adjustments.

The collection is available now, view the full campaign and more information available on saundersstudio.com.
