Jewellery designer Jasmin Sparrow on yoga, the best eyebrow pencil and her life changing beauty treatment

Jasmin Sparrow

She’s one of the new wave of New Zealand designers taking the world by storm. Here, Jamsin Sparrow shares her complete beauty routine and the products that changed her skin.

What is your morning beauty routine?

When I first wake up I brush my teeth and use an Ayurvedic tongue scraper. It sounds strange but it assists the body in eliminating toxins that have accumulated in the mouth overnight. I do this before I put anything into my body. I then make a collagen drink and drink it on an empty stomach. One of my close friends is a naturopath and medical herbalist so I get all of my supplements through her and do whatever she tells me to. I use Collagen M.D. mixed with a good quality vitamin C powder, it has changed my skin.

I use Aspect Dr Mild cleanser in the shower, then apply Cosmedix eye cream, Aspect Dr Vitamin C Serum, Aspect Dr B Plus then Cosmedix Peptide Rich SPF50.

Make up, I use either Dior Face and Body or Hourglass tinted moisturizer. They both have a hydrating dewy finish which I love. Once I find a product that works for me I tend to stick to it. Most of my products I have used for years. I use NARS bronzer in Laguna on my cheeks and I often brush some on my eyelids too. I love RMS Lip2Cheek in Spell. I use this on my cheeks for a dewy finish. Hourglass Eyebrow pencil has been a favourite for years. I use a brown Kevyn Aucoin eye pencil on the outer corners of my eyes [as] it makes them pop without being too harsh. Finally Lancome Hypnose mascara on my lashes. I keep my make-up fresh and simple and finish my look with whatever jewellery I’m feeling that day.

I wash my hair every 2-3 days, I really can’t be bothered with my hair, I hate washing it, brushing it and getting it cut. I use either Kevin Murphy Hydrating shampoo and conditioner or Oribe. I brush it in the shower with a wet brush, this has been life changing, my hair gets so tangled and difficult to brush, I brush it while my conditioner is still in. Then I leave it, I don’t even brush it till I wash it next. If it really needs a brush I’ll use my Mason Pearson hairbrush.

Lastly, I’m addicted to lip balm. Sans Ceuticals lip balm is my go-to. I have them everywhere; in my handbag, car, on my desk, next to my bed. I’m not very good at wearing lipstick, but love a little lip stain. Chanel Rouge Coco Flash is my favourite. It’s really hydrating, as well as NARS Matte lip pencils. I wear them under lip balm.

I spray Tacit by Aesop or Do Son by Diptyque before I leave the house.

What is your night beauty routine?

I remove my make up with Bioderma make up remover, then cleanse with Lesse Refining cleanser— I love Lesse products, natural, organic and considered, it’s a beautiful brand that I love supporting. I adore their serum and face mask too, I include them in my beauty routine regularly. I apply my eye cream, Cosmedix Refine serum, Aspect Dr B Plus then Aspect Dr Resveratrol moisturiser.

Describe what you do for a living? What does a typical day look like for you?

I am the director and designer at Jasmin Sparrow, and mother of two Archie and Lola. 3-4 times a week I wake up and go to an early Yoga or Reformer Pilates class at around 6am. I like to go early so I can be back before my kids wake up. Then it’s a busy hour and a half getting the kids ready for school, making breakfast, lunches, packing bags, everyones dropped off and I’m usually at the showroom by 8.30am. Everyday is so different; working from the showroom with my team, appointments, meetings, photoshoots, travel, no two days are the same.

What is the supermarket/ drug store/ chemist beauty product(s) that you use and love?

Bioderma. I stock up anytime I’m in Paris or get my friends to bring it home for me.

What is your main form of beauty body maintenance? What products do you use on your body?

Kiehl's Creme de Corps or Sans Ceuticals body oil. I use either one of these all over my body everyday. I get a massage once a month, see a naturopath often and I take supplements based on what my body needs.

I started a course of laser hair removal last year— not having to shave or wax legs or underarms is life changing. I wish I’d gotten onto this years ago!

How do you keep fit/ healthy? Does exercise form a large part of your routine?

I love Yoga. I’ve done it for about 15 years. I’m planning to do a yoga teachers course, not because I want to teach, I just want to get better. I also love reformer pilates and walks in nature to clear my head. I try to walk everyday and meditate daily for a healthy mind.

What cosmetic procedures/ professional treatments do you have as part of your beauty routine?

I have really bad skin, the worst. My skin is so sensitive and prone to breakouts. I have to be really careful with both diet and products. The ladies at the Face Place helped transform my skin. I get a peel and Vitamin A infusion with them every few months.

What do you do when your body needs to recover?

A walk, a yoga class or a swim in the sea.

You’re tired/ hungover/ rundown: what is your beauty hack?

Water, inside and out. A swim in the ocean and lots of water to rehydrate.

What is the one non-negotiable in your beauty routine?

SPF and lots of water.

Do you have a beauty icon? Who are they and why?

I love effortless Parisian beauty. I don’t have an icon as such, I admire anyone with natural, effortless confidence.

What is the best advice on beauty you’ve received?

Real beauty comes from within.

What is the best advice on health you’ve received?

Eat a balanced diet. I eat plant based, and drink loads of water.

What is the one product you can’t live without?

Lip balm and SPF — I couldn’t possibly choose!
