Incase you thought the Hermès’ Birkin Bag couldn’t get more expensive, it’s just been turned into an NFT

More NFT's! It would appear more and more that it's an NFT world and we're all just living in it. The latest kid on the NFT block, is Hermès‘ iconic Birkin bag, which has been given the same treatment in a new auction held by e-commerce platform Basic.Space.

The digiital artwork is titled Baby Birkin, and was created by Mason Rothschild and Eric Ramirez. The designer bag has been reimagined into a 2000x2000 pixel animation, and depicts a transparent rendering of the Birkin with an embryo growing inside it against a space-like backdrop and "is accompanied by a space-age.wav soundscape, amplifying this illustration of pregnancy in an enigmatic creation, and an ironic nod to the iconic bag." Basic.Space noted via Instagram. "The Birkin, by French luxury goods maker Hermès, has been revered as a symbol of luxury and status since its introduction in the 1980s."

Currently, the artwork has 17 bids so far with the highest at $6,000 USD, you can head to the auction yourself at Basic.Space which is running until Thursday May 20th, 11:59am.

While we are relatively sure Hermès is not involved with the digital artwork, the luxury French house is doing innovating of its own by teaming up with MycoWorks, a start up company based out of California. The partnership will develop a mushroom-derived leather alternative using their patented Fine Mycelium, creating a new material named Sylvania. Using advanced technology involving mycelium (the vegetative strands of the fungi), the mycelium components are drawn out from the roots and reproduced to create a material that imitates the properties and feel of the leather we have all grown accustomed to.

Three years in the making, the Hermès' iconic Victoria travel bag will be the first in its installment of mycelium leather bags as an addition to the Hermès collections and will be available in stores at the end of 2021.
