Hello, autumn! While I'm not thrilled to see your frosty face in the darker mornings, I am glad for the reprieve in the summer monsoon to soak up some much-missed sun, even if it is done in a blazer instead of a bikini. The month of May in Sydney is often the first welcome of the cold. Just ask all of the editors in shorts at Carriageworks as they shiver through another fashion week wishing they'd remembered the brutal shock of the cold front from last year (those editors are me, to be clear). While we know there is an even colder winter ahead, summer amnesia sets in, and we never think it's going to be particularly bad. Which is why our shopping habits tend to be on the more optimistic side during this season.
While fleecy moments for comfort are still welcome, in place of heavy coats and blazers are fun pants and shirts perfect for layering. Sandals are switched out for mules, which will eventually switch out for boots, and buttery soft cashmere scarves are finally finding their way back into the rotation. In the meantime, we are still layering our favourite ribbed tanks, and leaving the sunglasses on while the rain holds off. As we prepare for the cold and our winter-long desire to wear heavy black coats with more black layered underneath, we're taking autumn as an opportunity to go out with a bang in the colour department. Below, are our top 10 fashion favourites for the month of May.
