When we first came across Coco Capitán's work and her scrawled, almost child-like handwriting printed across Gucci hoodies, we were intrigued by her multidisciplinary practice and thoughtful text. Now, after many different collaborations across the fashion industry, the Spanish-born artist has been enlisted by accessories brand CHARLES & KEITH to explore complex emotions that prose can evoke in fashion and create wearable pieces around her work.
The Coco Capitán X CHARLES & KEITH collection is comprised of just two pieces, a pair of chunky, structured loafers and a small top-handle bag that serve as an understated base for Capitán's work. Injected with a personal touch, Capitán has taken over the brands classic san-serif logo with her signature scrawled script and dainty daisies inspired by “He loves me, he loves me not.”
The tiny blue daisies are stitched onto the Perline Penny Loafers – one of CHARLES & KEITH's signature styles – alongside the words “Loves Me Blue, Love Me Blue Not.” Her distinctive script is also embroidered onto the Double Handle Sculptural Tote Bag, which shows a solitary flower symbolically blooming through the concrete.
“My art is inspired by overheard conversations, diary entries, and sudden waves of introspection. I believe that words can transcend cultures and give us a glimmer of hope for brighter times,” said Capitán.
