What was once only reserved for carnivals and school dances, Balenciaga takes glowing in the dark to new dimensions with its release of an exclusive glow in the dark capsule collection. Preparing us all for a post-pandemic rave or perhaps just a really eccentric virtual zoom outing, Balenciaga gets clever once again.
As the luxury house continues to pioneer in its innovative and offbeat strategies, Georgian creative director Demna Gvasalia amuses us with humour, optimism and wit. After Balenciaga's FW21 video game presentation, the house is quickly becoming a known name in everything unexpected and uncanny.
The new capsule collection includes light and easy casual wear including t-shirts, sweatshirts, pool slides, logo baseball hat and socks, all infused with glow in the dark technology that is activated under any regular light source. With garments that light up only after dark, Balenciaga travels us all back to fond memories and childhood nostalgia as well as preparing us all for an after hours rave, equipped, glowing and post pandemic ready.
With a subtle tease on the Balenciaga official instagram previous to its launch, with the new glow in the dark collection the brand introduces a new mascot - the rave smiley. Taking us all back to the pervasive culture and idealistic low key style reverent in the 90s, the glow in the dark smiley also joins the brands newest logo iteration, what's quickly becoming the iconic lions-and-laurels double B logo.
Perhaps following the suit of other designers such as Fendi and its release of a glow in the dark purse, Balenciaga instills hope and optimism for a post-pandemic clubbing future. With the collection priced between $175 - $1450, its no easy investment however, perhaps life wouldn't be the same without having glowed in the dark at least once?
