Yasmin Suteja on the power of lipstick with Chanel

“If you’re sad or heartbroken, make yourself up, dress up, add more lipstick and attack.”

Gabrielle Chanel's famed quote has been the mantra of women across the globe for decades, as has the notion that a little red lipstick can fix a lot of life's problems. These days, the sentiment feels slightly less simplistic, but even so – one can't deny the power of taking time for oneself.

This is the expression that Chanel achieves with their new Rouge Allure Velvet lipstick. 20 key shades embody Chanel's vision of a singular and plural red, reflecting the duality of the house and nodding to the nuance of women's lives.

Designed to bring out each one of a woman’s many facets, this new collection of colour is centred around the six iconic shades of Rouge Allure Velvet: soft Libre (62) and Abstrait (69), La Favorite (43), a coral with fuchsia accents, Rouge Charnel (56), a “true red”, Rouge Feu (57), a red orange, and Rouge Vie (58), a dusty red.

Playing with these shades, here, is photographer and creative powerhouse, Yasmin Suteja, who, in images lensed by Darren McDonald, and complete with a natural glow crafted by CHANEL makeup artist, Victoria Baron, speaks to the duality of women and the many characters we can play in our daily lives. For her, her signature shade leans towards neutrals in her daily life, and switches when she wants to make a statement. "I definitely have a signature! I love a brown lip colour. On the rare occasion, I will go for a red lip. Usually when I’m wearing all black and want to elevate the look." Her brown of choice? "I love the Rouge Allure #212 Caractere."

As important as a shade is, what makes one return to a lipstick is largely down to formula. For Chanel, perfecting formula has always been a key pillar in the brand's beauty offering. When it was launched in 2011, Rogue Allure Velvet bridged the gap between matte and luminous for the very first time. Today, its formula contains ultra-fine pigments, for intense and long-wearing colour, while additionally possessing pearly pigments, giving each shade a luminous quality.

"I love that the formula is nourishing. The Rouge Allure Velvet formula is infused with my favourite nourishing ingredients – castor oil and shea butter," Suteja adds.
