Alert your nearest influencer – if keeping up with TikTok's latest core wasn't enough, there's soon to be a new kid on the proverbial block of social media platforms. The newest application to catch our attention is Lemon8, an Instagram-esque video and photo sharing application from TikTok's parent company, ByteDance. Lemon8 is surging up the app store rankings, now becoming one of the top 10 most popular apps to be downloaded in the U.S.

While the app isn't technically new (it's already been launched in countries like Singapore, Thailand and Japan), it feels like we haven't heard much about it yet. Here's everything you'll want to know to stay ahead of the curve.

 

What is the platform?

It's a social media application that curates content like videos and photos around topics – like food, wellness, beauty and travel. You can add photos and videos to your profile, explore a curated 'For You' type page, and can still 'follow' and be 'followed' on the platform. However, it places focus on your ability to shop the content you see – like an influencer's outfit and how much it cost.

 

Why is it so popular?

Lemon8's powerhouse parent company ByteDance also owns TikTok, so it's got some well-connected backing. The app's sudden gain in popularity is a good indication that established creators from TikTok are already being tapped to join and promote the new platform to their existing audiences.

Lemon8 sets itself apart as a shopping-content hybrid. Its approach has given the platform an edge, with it being described as if 'Instagram and Pinterest had a baby'.

 

When is it available in Australia?

The application has only just been released in the U.S. earlier this year, but while the app isn't available here just yet, we don't think we'll have to wait long for it given the traction its receiving. We'll keep you updated as we hear more.
