A new Virgil Abloh book is in the works, titled ‘Make It Ours’

The death of Virgil Abloh reverberated around the world in late November 2021, its impact felt across industries from fashion to music and beyond. Now, Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Robin Givhan is set to write a book about the late Off-White founder, titled Make It Ours.

What will be covered about Abloh in Make It Ours?

In Make It Ours, Givhan is expected to explore Abloh’s influence and unpack how Black American culture has influenced multiple industries including fashion, music and sport. It will intimately look at how the culture, “driven by hip-hop, street style and sports, [collides] with the grand old bastions of high luxury to democratise fashion, create a new global vernacular for state and transform the way each of us constructs our identity through what we wear.”

Abloh is used as a case study as the book delves into his life as the Off-White founder and then Louis Vuitton men’s artistic director. As one of America’s leading cultural voices, Givhan is primed for writing Make It Ours, known for being one of the only to centre fashion in discussions and thoroughly exploring its role as a tool for communicating.

Who is Robin Givhan?

Givhan was awarded the Putitzer Price for Criticism in 2006, the first time the award was won by a fashion writer. A decorated writer, her book concerning the Battle of Versailles Fashion Show – a pivotal moment in the careers of designers such as Halston and Oscar de la Renta – was published in 2015 to much fanfare. Givhan has also provided commentary for a number of works including Runway Madness by Lucian Perkins and Michelle: Her First Year as First Lady, focusing on Michelle Obama.

Make It Ours is set to be published by Crown, a subsidiary of publishing giant Penguin Random House. A release date is still to be announced, so watch this space for further details.
