What to watch: the best TV shows while you’re socially distancing

In the age of COVID-19, navigating life in a landscape trying to contain a fast-spreading virus can feel cripplingly scary. For those of us who have the privilege, self-isolation is an effective way to combat the spread between bodies and potentially more vulnerable people. Some of us will be working from home, some of us will be not working, but at home. Most of us will need things to take our minds off the chaotic state of the world right now, because despite the internet framing your enforced sabbatical like a drawn-out Sunday afternoon, we are still doing this for reasons that make being a human on the planet right now, not ideal. As we bunker down in attempt to wait for this viral storm to die off, disassociation will be calling our names, and come forth we will into it’s sweet arms by way of TV shows from a simpler time.

Grey's Anatomy

There is something comforting about literally 16 seasons of medical drama to keep your mind off of the very real medical drama happening in the world. Grey’s Anatomy is not exactly uplifting, but perfect for those who are disassociating HARD.

Love is Blind

Was this show just preparing us for dating in isolation for the rest of our lives? I hope not, considering it was a shit show. A shit show I was unable to look away from for 10 episodes of madness. A cure for overthinking because of the mind-numbing nature of the show wherein participants date in isolation without seeing each other and get engaged after 10 days.

Downton Abbey

Perhaps one of the most comforting watches in television history. There is something soothing about watching Yorkshire aristocrats’ squabble over family fortunes and fashion trends. A period drama to take us back to simpler times.

Broad City

Literally an ode to the age where you could eat a tuna sandwich on the subway let alone cough into your elbow without a side eye. Broad City follows best friends Abbi and Ilana in a low-fi account of the ridiculous NYC scenarios they find themselves in daily. Insane and feel good.

Big Little Lies

Soulful if nothing else. Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley and Nicole Kidman all at once is enough to soothe anyone at this time. With enough drama to make you forget your own, and Meryl Streep guest starring in season two, you’ll likely need nothing else.
