St. Agni launches “genderless” denim collection

St. Agni

Fashion has always been a catalyst for exploration and expression, and as we move through an age where everything is questioned, reframed and reimagined through non-traditional lenses, it's only natural that the industry help facilitate such conversations. Gender expression is one that has been on the tip of fashion's tongue for the past few years. We are beginning to do away with the idea that clothes are gendered, and St. Agni is choosing to meet the moment with the introduction of a genderless denim collection.

Rooted in a desire for the celebration of the freedom to dress and express ourselves, the Byron Bay-based brand which is known best for ready-to-wear wardrobe staples has ventured into denim for its AW22 release. Asking the questions of brand betterment, the brand is stepping into a new role of creating silhouettes that cater to myriad identities. For St. Agni, this extension marks the beginning of a foundational, lasting change. One that we at RUSSH are excited to witness.

Below, we speak with founder and designer Lara Fells on sustaining the sentiment of inclusivity, why denim, and what's next for St. Agni.

Tell us about the new denim collection. Why now?

Denim is a key wardrobe foundation and we have wanted to incorporate it into St. Agni for some time. The denim capsule has been in the works for over a year. Our focus was on sustainable materials and responsive manufacturing, so it was important for us to not rush the process and take our time to develop.

What was the inspiration behind the shapes of the jeans?

We focused on creating three core styles in perfect fits; Straight, Flare and Wide Leg - offering versatility in shapes while remaining true to classic denim cues of basic, unembellished design.

In the collection notes you speak about a need for inclusivity as a brand. What kind of steps are you taking to ensure this ethos is sustained?

We are constantly working towards creating more inclusive collections. We are creating select pieces that are genderless and working on fits that are universal.

What has been the most exciting part of this new collection?

Creating the Denim Capsule in Australia is really exciting for us. Denim has always been a fundamental part of my wardrobe and I am so excited to be able to wear St. Agni’s very own Denim.

What are you looking forward to as a brand?

I am looking forward to exploring genderless dressing further and experimenting with new designs for future collections. I am also excited about showcasing our Resort ’23 collection at this year's Afterpay Australian Fashion Week.
