Our screen picks from awards season to make you laugh and cry, sometimes all at once

The 2020 awards season was a big one, with so many heart-warming, gripping and intriguing new masterpieces. We’re rounding up our must-see films and TV shows of the year. The ones that made us laugh, cry, spiral into existentialism, and stuck with us for longer than anticipated. Our must-watch list for the awards season may not be as covetable as Obama's, but highlights some of the best we’ve seen all year.

If you're stuck at home in self-isolation, these are the ones to watch - if you haven't already.

With some of our favourites starring (Adam Driver, Laura Dern and Scarlett Johansson), Gold Globe-nominated Marriage Story follows the gruelling and heart wrenching story of a stage director and his actor wife through the aftermath of their relationship and the challenges they are faced with along the way.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge returns in Fleabag’s season two with just as much angst as we’d expected following the finale of season one. As Waller-Bridge navigates life after tragedy, she takes us along for the journey, the audience as her “secret camera friend”, and her as the ever angry and grief-filled ‘Fleabag’ she begs us to judge. Fleabag season two won multiple Golden Globe awards this year - including for ‘Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy’, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge's ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series- Musical or Comedy’.

Following the harrowing and true story of a young girl, Marie Adler who is brutally raped in her own home, two female detectives follow evidence of similar cases to bring down a serial rapist. One of the most challenging watches,  Unbelievable was a 2020 Golden Globe nominee for ‘Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made For Television’. It communicates the ways in which trauma and assault can derail one’s life, and how the system isn’t always on our side.

The South Korean black comedy film follows two vastly different families in class who are brought together in a symbiotic relationship. The film, directed by Bong Joon-ho is eerily fitting for our time and provides must-see social satire and class-commentary in an original format. Parasite's multiple awards this season include the Palm D’Or at Cannes and a Golden Globe for ‘Best motion Picture – Foreign Language’ - and it's unsurprisingly tipped for an Oscar.

In the seventh film adaptation of the 1868 novel, director Greta Gerwig thoughtfully tells the story of the beloved March sisters with renewed, contemporary energy. With so many of our favourites on screen (Meryl Streep, Timothée Chalamet, Laura Dern and Saoirse Ronan in her AACTA-winning role as Jo), it is hard not to fall in love again with the timeless and poetic depiction of sisterhood.
