Murran Hub: A First Nations initiative with over 70 stores is launched for art and work

Helmed by creator Bek Lasky, Murran Hub is situated in the heart of Geelong CBD and is an initiative driven to platform Indigenous businesses. The objectives of Murran are to provide employment and training opportunities for First Nations people, as well as to provide the wider community with the opportunity to buy from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander businesses. Murran Hub is now open to public access. Here's what's been unveiled so far.

What is the context of the name?

'Murran', meaning Eucalypt Leaf in Wadawurrung language is a welcome gift of peace and affinity. You smoke it for cleansing, crush and leave it to bubble for healing. For millennia, Wadawurrung people scented themselves with Eucalypt. The men would adorn their spears with the leaves as a peace offering, signifying the cessation of any fighting on Country. Coming together for smoking ceremonies and to foster a space for the cross-collection of knowledge and idea generation is a tradition inherent to Country. It is a gift prospered and brought forth from the waters and connective tissues of Country. The Murran is an eternal symbol of First Nations custodianship.

 What's included in the spaces?

Murran Hub includes a retail store, gallery, cafe and coworking space inclusive of hot desking opportunities, conference rooms and event-space. These amenities are also made accessible for non-Indigenous partners and organizations. There are over 70+ retail outlets from First Nations vendors and a gallery featuring rotating new exhibitions. Dabakan Koorliny (Walk Slowly) by Kiri Tawhai is currently on showcase.
