If you read this article while you were half asleep, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was some kind of fever dream. But no, Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, and Cole Escola — three of the funniest, most self-aware minds in entertainment — really are making a Miss Piggy movie. Yes, the ultimate diva of our childhood is getting her moment in the cinematic sun, courtesy of arguably one of the most iconic trios in Hollywood. Here's what you need to know.
Who's involved?
Lawrence actually gave away her involvement in the project in an appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast, hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. “I don’t know if I can announce this but I am just going to … Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it,” she revealed.
Naturally, Rogers and Yang asked if the duo would also star, to which Lawrence replied: “I think so. We have to… It’s fucked up [that we haven’t done a movie together].”
Escola, who recently scored a Tony for their hit broadway play, Oh, Mary!, is on board to write the screenplay.
What will it be about?
Details are still under wraps, but it’s safe to say this won’t be your average Muppet movie. With Cole Escola writing, we can expect something clever, a little absurd, and obviously very funny.
Miss Piggy, for the uninitiated, is the glamorous, temperamental Muppet who first appeared on The Muppet Show in the 1970s. Created by Bonnie Erickson and performed for decades by Frank Oz, the character has built her legacy on dramatic entrances, impossible standards, and an unwavering belief that she was destined for fame. Now, she's finally getting that spotlight.
When will it come out?
Again, this much remains to be seen. The project seems to still be in early development, so it will be a while before we get a firm release date. We'll keep yoiu updated when that happens.
