There's no question that Legally Blonde's Elle Woods has become a cultural icon since the first film premiered almost two decades ago. Not a day goes by where we don't reference the character's quick wit, crave her contagiously positive attitude and take inspiration from her undeniably stylish (and pink-hued) outfits. Although 2020 has had its pitfalls, one thing it has given us is hope – with the news that Legally Blonde 3 will be arriving to our screens in May 2022.
Sure, it may be a little later than we would have liked, but given the current state of the world, we can't be overly picky. During a virtual reunion to celebrate the film's 20 year anniversary, the iconic cast which of course, included Witherspoon, Jennifer Coolidge (Paulette Bonafonté), Selma Blair (Vivian Kensington) and Luke Wilson (Emmett Richmond) confirmed the heavily anticipated release date with fans.

"I can't tell you what it means to me to see your faces. This was my college. This is where I went to college. I didn't finish college but I finished 'Legally Blonde,'" Witherspoon shared during the recording.
To prepare us for the masterpiece that is sure to be Legally Blonde 3, we're giving you a debrief on everything we know about the film so far. All the important information lies below.
When will production for Legally Blonde 3 begin?
In May of this year, it was announced that actress Mindy Kaling would be jumping on board for the threequel as one of the film's scriptwriters, alongside Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Dan Goor. The pair won't be altering the film's original script – written by Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah in mid-2018 – but rather, will be bringing an "entirely fresh spin."
As for filming, there's been no confirmation on whether the cast have begun, however, production seem to still be on track to meet a May 2022 release date.

What is the plot of Legally Blonde 3?
When we left our girl Elle at the end of the film's sequel, the Harvard-student-turned-successful lawyer expressed her dreams of moving to Washington DC, setting her sights firmly on The White House, no less. Although we know very little about the film's plot at present, Witherspoon kick-started our imagination during an interview in December 2019, where she dropped a few hints.
When prompted by The Hollywood Reporter, with the sentence "Legally Blonde 3 will be..." the actress responded with, “So much fun. So full of fashion. So full of awesome feminist ideas. It will be global. It will have animals. It will have returning cast members. We just need to film it first. But that’s my hope and dream for Legally Blonde 3.”
Who will return for the threequel?
Fans of Legally Blonde will be happy to hear that everyone's favourite beauty icon – and Elle's confidante – Paulette Bonafonté will be making a return for the third film. In the same interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Witherspoon confirmed that Legally Blonde 3 "Will be the return of Jennifer Coolidge, which is the greatest," which is the news we so desperately wanted to hear.
As for other member's of the film's memorable cast, Witherspoon told ET during an interview in December 2019, that “If we end up doing it, hopefully they end up all being there."
