Sarah Michelle Gellar just weighed in on the new 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' reboot

If you're anything like the RUSSH team, you've thought of not much else since news broke that model, chef-extraordinaire and the blueprint of the Brat revolution, Gabbriette Bechtel (and fiancé, 1975 lead signer Matty Healy) was in Sydney late last year.

After frantic speculation, Gabbriette eventually put an end to our guessing, confirming her visit to Australia was to film a reboot of the hit 90s classic, I Know What You Did Last Summer. We know what you're thinking: this isn't the first time the cult film has been revisited. But unlike the slightly disappointing 2021 reboot by Amazon Prime, we actually have hope that this one be as good as the original. All the important details, below.

What did Sarah Michelle Gellar say about the film reboot?

Sarah Michelle Gellar – recently interviewed on Bowen Yang's podcast Las Culturistas – said she never expected a reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer and initially thought, “I’m dead,” when asked to return.

She credited director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson for creatively finding a way to bring her back, calling the experience “surreal.”

“Jenn Robinson brought it up to me like three or four years ago – this has been a long process,"Gellar said. "I thought, ‘It’s such a good idea, but you don’t know. Do people still love the movie? Do people still watch the movie?’”

Why did Lola Tung and Nicholas Alexander Chavez get cut from I Know What You Did Last Summer?

It was revealed only recently that Lola Tung and Nicholas Alexander Chavez, who were originally set to star in the film, were no longer part of the project — a change that sparked curiosity and speculation among fans. Addressing the matter, director Jennifer Kaytin finally shared the reason behind their departure. In an interview, she explained, "In every movie, it’s best laid plans, and then you edit the movie and you put it together and you go, ‘I love this in a vacuum. This is a fantastic scene. But it doesn’t fit in the movie,.'" And to further rest the fandoms minds at ease Kaytin explained , "It was just one of those situations where it had nothing to do with Lola and Nicholas — they are both so fantastic. I really would love to work with them again. I loved working with them. They did a fabulous job. But in the larger tapestry of the film, it just didn’t fit."

Who else is cast in I Know What You Did Last Summer?

As you might have already gleaned, the film has an incredibly star-studded cast. Joining Gabbriette is Monsters star Nicholas Alexander Chaves, plus Lola Tung (The Summer I Turned Pretty), and Austin Nichols. There's also Outerbanks lead Madelyn Cline and Bodies Bodies Bodies star Chase Sui Wonders — two more Hollywood stars who also made the trek to Sydney for the project.

We also now know that OG stars  Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are back on board, reprising their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson.

And off camera, the reboot is being spearheaded by American director and film producer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who co-wrote Marvel Studios's Thor: Love and Thunder alongside Taika Waititi. Gabbriette revealed in an interview with Elle USA that she had travelled to Australia for filming, and some rumours have suggested that the star could head back to Australia in 2025 to promote the work. But as for the rest, we'll have to wait and see.

What is I Know What You Did Last Summer about?

Judging from early reports, the film draws pretty heavily on the plot from the original. If you aren't caught up, the OG I Know What You Did Last Summer charts  a group of friends who accidentally run over a fisherman, and dump the body for cover. Pretty quickly, however, they realise there's a witness to their crime via a mysterious letter and, as you can imagine, terrifying chaos ensues. As the trailer suggests, it looks like a new group of friends encounter a pretty similar fate years later, and call on Julie and Ray for help... Whether they can give them the answers they need remains to be seen.
