Motherhood opens up your heart in ways you never knew were possible according to Helena Christensen. The Danish photographer and international supermodel says that becoming a mother gave her a unique sense of empowerment ,"you are part of the miracle of life in such a profound way."
An ambassador for the UN and a face involved in Pandora's new Exploration of Love series, she is an open book when sharing her true feelings about the journey of motherhood. Pandora’s Exploration of Love Study joins forces with Helena Christensen, Pernille Teisbaek and Iris Gold to explore what motherly love means in today's world. As such, Christensen has shared her own experiences with joy, life and self love. Below, she tells us that her personal hero is in fact her own mother and how her son helped change the way she sees the world.
What is the first thing we should know about you?
That I’m obsessed with swimming in cold rivers, lakes or the ocean.
Did motherhood change the way you see the world?
I’m not sure how I would’ve viewed the world had I not had my son, but he definitely has changed the way I think and the way I love.
Who is your personal hero?
My mom. She has had an extraordinary life in so many ways and has endured so much and she is a force of nature, both physically and spiritually.
How has becoming a mother made you feel empowered?
You are part of the miracle of life in such a profound way. You feel all emotions deeply because your heart opens up in ways you never knew were possible. You give life and you raise life. And by doing so, life gives you so much strength and knowledge back.
What is your proudest achievement?
Having my son and becoming a global UN ambassador.
What does self care and self love mean to you?
You need to take care of yourself, physically and mentally. By this you love yourself. And by loving and respecting yourself, you are capable of loving others and taking care of them, it’s very simple really.
When seeking creative inspiration, where do you turn?
I find inspiration everywhere, but mostly in nature. I’m a photographer and see everything through a lens, not just literally but my eye catches everything around me. I am a very curious person; I observe a lot. I also find endless inspiration in movies, books and music.
What are some words of wisdom you would like to share with new mothers?
It can be very tough in the moment but also very beautiful. Everything passes so try to enjoy those moments regardless. Your heart will only grow.
