Going green: everything to know about CBD beauty

CBD is the latest ingredient exploding into the skincare and beauty market, but not everyone is familiar with the science behind the buzzword. Following news of the legalisation of cannabis in Australia’s capital (caveats definitely apply), we deep-dive into the world of CBD beauty.

To break it down, CBD is the shortened word form of cannabidiol, a chemical compound that naturally occurs in the cannabis plant. Although it’s extracted from cannabis flowers and buds, CBD contains very little THC (the cannabinoid commonly associated with the 'high' from marijuana).

Although there is little scientific proof to justify the advantages of CBD, there are a large number of claims and reviews which have added to the increasing hype. Though still under testing, benefits of CBD in skincare products can include soothing irritation, calming redness, reducing breakouts and moisturising without clogging pores. As a nutritional supplement, CBD oil is rich in vitamins and antioxidants which can stimulate collagen production for youthful and glowing skin. Not just skin-deep, CBD can also be used to relieve joint and muscle pain and put the spring back in your step.

Despite progressions made to legalise recreational marijuana, CBD oil is still categorised as a Schedule 4 drug under Australian law and can only be prescribed by a doctor. As the debate continues and governments have more open discussions about cannabis, we may see CBD products popping up in local pharmacies in the near future.

If you are lucky enough to live in the UK or selected states in the US, we have rounded up a selection of our recommended CBD products to try.
