We could be heroes – Christian Louboutin enters the Marvel universe

Fashion is about storytelling – Christian Louboutin knows this better than most. Like a cherry red lip or the quiet luxury of a cashmere sweater, our shoes communicate to the world who we are – or who we hope to be. And so, the act of stepping beyond our front door, armed with our favourite Louboutin heels, becomes the opening line of this personal tale. If we're the authors of our lives, then Christian Louboutin is the stylish fairy godmother – or, in this case, the helpful Hulk or sweet and resourceful Groot – lending their superhuman powers to aid us along our hero's journey. I say this because, in a fitting turn of events, Christian Louboutin has joined forces with Marvel in celebration of Disney's 100th anniversary.

The result is a playful and dramatic collection immersed in the lore of Marvel's universe that any fan or newcomer to the comics and cinematic franchise will enjoy. Fascinated by Marvel's jewel-like Infinity Stones, Christian Louboutin has taken this motif and embedded it throughout the limited edition capsule collection that features shoes and accessories for women, men and children.

This hybrid design language manifests into a series of footwear, each sporting a joint logo that fuses together the signature reds of both Marvel and Christian Louboutin. The collection comprises Cuban-heeled ankle boots, loafers, metallic thigh-high boots, brogues, and sandals – the latter arriving in a gladiator style that climbs the shin or an open toe mule embellished with a bouquet of gems. Every pair pays homage to the Infinity Stones, be it subtly with crystals dotting the heels like the Louboutin Scales or jagged lotus-like patterns.

As part of the collaboration, Mr Louboutin co-created a superhero based on himself, named Loubi, who stars in an exclusive comic book launched with the capsule. In the comic book, Loubi is an Egyptian archaeologist, in a nod to Mr Louboutin's North African heritage, who sets out on a quest involving the Infinity Stones.

"I really like the fact that they didn’t try to picture me as a strong and muscular character, but went deeper in the understanding of my universe," says Mr Louboutin. "They went into the power of creativity and imagination: Someone who makes individuals dream and empowers them. When one manages to make people dream and inspire passion in them, it’s as much a superpower as it is an honor.”

Explore the capsule from Christian Louboutin and Marvel online or exclusively in-store at the brand's Westfield Sydney boutique this October.
