The best at-home infrared saunas for serious rest and recovery

Infrared saunas are big news in wellness right now. Whether you're into bathing culture, contrast therapy, recovery, sleep, detoxing or just looking for a wholesome hobby, there's a lot to be said about sitting quietly in a wooden box, sweating it out. But another thing enthusiasts will agree with is that it's an expensive hobby, and so there's been a whole lot of in at-home infrared saunas — cost per use, right?

It's an investment, so research is necessary. Fortunately for you, I'm also contemplating turning my garage into a wellness nirvana, and so have put together a list of the best at-home infrared saunas that are on my radar.

The best infrared saunas to buy for home

If you're already spending a bomb on bookings, or want to invest in your wellbeing without leaving the house, these are the best and most trusted infrared saunas you can install at home.

Clearlight Saunas

Clearlight is known for high-quality craftsmanship, low EMF (Electromagnetic Field) and ELF (Electric Field) levels, plus full-spectrum heating technology. They're more of an investment, but considered one of the leading brands. The Sanctuary Two Person design is a crowd favourite with a built-in sound system and chromotherapy lights in 12 colours. They have indoor and outdoor options, too.

Sunlighten

A globally recognised brand with a strong presence in Australia (and 20 years of experience), Sunlighten is known for its patented SoloCarbon heating technology, which provides a high density of infrared waves for maximum therapeutic benefits. They also use a third party to test EMF levels (you can read more about it on the website). They offer a range of models, including the Signature Infrared Sauna that comes as a one person model, or four. It's made from non-toxic wood, has an in-built speaker system and chromotherapy lights.

Vikara

Vikara offer traditional and infrared saunas, the latter being low EMF models made from sustainably sourced wood and full spectrum red heaters. I often take a sauna after I practice Pilates, and this is the brand they have in the space. It's hot but comfortable, and I always feel incredible after a session. Conveniently they offer two, three, four and eight person models.

Sun Stream

Sun Stream is a well known brand and the perfect choice for anyone with limited space. The Evolve Mini fits in most apartments (I've bookmarked this), and there's additional one, two, three and four person models. Each is low EMF and ELF, chromotherapy light settings, bluetooth and a lifetime residential warranty. They're one of the more affordable options on the market, too (without compromising on quality).

Revel Saunas

Revel makes traditional and infrared saunas, as well as hybrid models and ice baths (a one stop wellness destination). It's infrared offering is up there with the best: full-spectrum and far-infrared heaters, low EMF and constructed with western red cedar. The two person sauna is designed with 360 degrees of targeted light for full body benefits.

What is an infrared sauna?

An infrared sauna uses infrared light to heat the body from the inside out, causing the body to sweat while increasing circulation. The benefits are far reaching, from general relaxation to detoxification, recovery and reduced muscular tension. They're usually constructed from wood and come in varying sizes – some at-home saunas can fit up to four people.

How is an infrared different to a classic sauna?

An infrared sauna uses light technology to create heat, a method that distinguishes it from a traditional sauna. Instead of heating the air around you, which then heats your body, infrared heaters emit infrared light waves that are directly absorbed by your skin. This causes your core temperature to rise, triggering a good sweat at a much lower ambient air temperature – typically between 40°C and 60°C, compared to 80°C or more in a traditional sauna (think of it as a slow burn). Some people find infrared saunas more comfortable over a longer period of time, because they're not as intense or stifling.

A typical session can last from 20 to 45 minutes, depending on your preference.
