Want to feel and smell nostalgic? Try a perfumed body mist

Once relegated to teenagers, perfumed body sprays are suddenly everywhere again. CHANEL has some, Glossier just launched two, and it was announced this week that Calvin Klein would be bringing out a collection of four — they're even enriched with hydrating glycerin for soft, dewy, CK supermodel-adjacent skin. There's no argument Gen Z is responsible for the trend (thanks to the Sol de Janeiro of it all), but perfumed body mists are actually a great way to smell gorgeous in an understated way. They're often more safe for clothes and hair, as well.

Whether you view body mist as a perfume alternative or a compliment, the category has had a makeover and we're into it. The best perfumed body mists according to RUSSH, below.

Perfume vs perfumed body mist: what's the difference?

The main difference between a perfume, or more specifically an eau de parfum or a perfume extrait, is the concentration of perfume oil. A classic EDP will sit around 20% perfume oil. A perfumed body mist will be must lower, probably between 2 and 10%. This means softer projection and longevity. Often, a perfumed body mist will also be formulated without alcohol, or boosted with hydrating ingredients for skincare benefits.

CHANEL No 1 de CHANEL L'Eau Rouge Fragrance Mist

This smells powdery and soft, like a vintage lipstick. It's also enriched with camellia water to improve skin quality.

Glossier Body Spritz Sandstone

Sandstone is described as grounding and aromatic, with fig, herbs and a creamy coconut base.

Tom Ford Rose Prick All Over Body Spray

Tom Ford fragrances are not for the faint of heart, but the body mists present a sheerer version of its cult scent portfolio. Rose Prick is musky and sweet, like a mash-up of red rose and Turkish delight.

Maison Louise Marie Hair & Body Mist Fleur de Vanille

Niche perfume house Maison Louise Marie recently launched hair and body mist in addition to its cult line of perfume and perfume oils. Fleur de Vanille is a little sugary and nostalgic; the kind of sheer fragrance that feels familiar.

Byredo Bal d'Afrique Hair Perfume

Byredo's cult Bal D'Afrique also makes for a perfume hair perfume... just saying.

Calvin Klein Hair & Body Perfume Mist Nude Vanilla

Launching July 1, CK is bringing out four hydrating body mists with retro scent profiles like cotton musk and tropical coconut. Personally I love the sound of Nude Vanilla; CK is known for simplicity in fragrance and nothing feels more timeless than vanilla.

Ellis Brooklyn Vanilla Sin Hair and Body Fragrance Mist

Another vanilla but this time Ellis Brooklyn has tempered it with delicious black cherry, hazelnut and almond.

Dior J'Adore Body Mist

If you love the sensual spicy floral notes of J'Adore but prefer something more subtle, this perfumed body mist is it.

Jo Malone London Cyrus & Grapevine All Over Body Spray

More like a cologne than a fragrance, Cypress & Grapevine is clean, classic and herbacious.

Sol de Janeiro Cheirosa 62 Perfume Mist

You can't talk about body mists without mentioning Sol de Janeiro. Cheirosa 62 smells like summer in Rio: sun-warmed skin, fruits and sunscreen with a syrupy caramel base.
