If you thought our collective fascination with reboots and sequels was going anywhere, think again. The latest noughties icon to receive a current-day nod? Bend It Like Beckham. The cult classic first hit screens back in 2002 and not only launched its stars, Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra to global fame, but was responsible for igniting a love of soccer in a generation of girls — one that, if our obsession for the Matildas is anything to go by, is very much alive and well.
So, what will the sequel entail? All the important details, below.
Who will be involved?
Before you get too excited, the OG cast are yet to be locked in. Speaking to Deadline, director Gurinder Chadha shared, “I’m excited to revisit the original characters and revive the enduring story and build on the legacy we helped to create for the women’s game." But she also tempered expectations, saying Nagra and Knightley, as well as other actors Archie Panjabi and Juliet Stevenson, “are aware that a sequel is being developed, but they obviously want to see a script before they commit." Keeping us hopeful, she added, “I’m pretty certain that everyone’s going to want to come back," and, "“Everything hinges on the script and if the original cast likes it. I am working really hard to make sure every character I bring back has a decent arc and scenes.”
What would the sequel be about?
An exact plot remains to be seen, but it looks like Chadha wants to explore the way women's soccer has evolved over the last two decades — and the issues that still persist.
"A lot has changed since the original movie, but I think that people still don't think that women should play football," she told BBC. "There are people who still don't take it seriously, although the Lionesses are riding high." She added, "I've left it a while, but I thought: look at the Euros, look at the Lionesses."
It's unclear whether we will catch up with Jess and Juliette in the present day, or be introduced to a new generation of soccer hopefuls. Either way, consider us seated.
When will it be released?
In short, it's too early to tell. The cast will need to be set in stone before filming can begin, and a release date is firmed up. We'll keep you updated as we know more.
