Of course, Margot Robbie is the obvious choice to play Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s live-action remake

If we’re honest, we always knew that there would come a time when Barbie would get its long-awaited live-action debut. Frankly, we thought that it would have come sooner, given how keen Hollywood is at the moment on the idea of adapting any and all animations into real-life cinematic… masterpieces? Although what we didn’t exactly anticipate is that this live-action moment would have such promise.

To just about everyone’s surprise, our beloved Greta Gerwig is taking the reins on a live-action Barbie remake, and Australian icon Margot Robbie will be taking the lead as none other than – yes, you guessed it – Barbie.

Maybe this isn’t the hellhole we initially envisioned? Below, we’ve gathered everything we know about the Barbie live-action remake so far.

Greta Gerwig has been confirmed to both direct and co-write the film.

As already mentioned, Gerwig has been confirmed as both the director and co-writer on the upcoming Barbie live-action film. If you tend to keep up with the comings and goings of the Lady Bird director, then you’ll be aware that news of her involvement in the film isn’t exactly new.

Gerwig was first linked to the film almost two years ago when it was first announced; with people speculating that this would be her next big project following the release of Little Women. The film will mark her third directorial feature.

Margot Robbie will obviously play Barbie.

It’s impossible to imagine a more fitting Barbie than beloved homegrown star, Margot Robbie. In a recent interview, the Babylon actor and Chanel muse confirmed that she would be starring in the project; sharing that she's aware that the role of Barbie brings its own unique challenges and "baggage".

“[Barbie] comes with a lot of baggage!” She shared. “And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it.

“People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”

Hopefully, this is confirmation that Robbie and Gerwig's iteration of Barbie will be getting a much-needed update. Plus, for fans of tv series Sex Education who thought that its lead Emma Mackey an uncanny Margot Robbie lookalike, know that she's been tapped to star alongside Robbie in the Barbie adaptation. In what part exactly? Right now that remains to be seen, but we can only guess it will be as Barbie's younger sister Skipper.

As for the rest of the cast, Will Ferrell will star in the role of CEO of a toy company that "may or may not be Mattel", according to The Hollywood Reporter. Whereas, Ryan Gosling will play Ken, a role he was born for, and other actors like Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp, and America Ferrera have also been cast.

When will the Barbie live-action remake be released?

Variety shared news that the film is set to enter production in 2022 with a July 21, 2023 release date; which, makes sense given Robbie is currently tied up with other projects.

Is there a trailer?

We're glad you asked. Released in the days leading up to Christmas, the Barbie trailer is everything we could have wanted and then some. Opening with the theme song from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Gerwig sets the scene with little girls playing with little dolls, until a towering Margot Robbie appears before them as the original Barbie in her 1959 black and white bathing suit. Needless to say it's excellent and we cannot wait for the film to drop.
