Alexandra Agoston on her beauty non-negotiables and why she loves French skincare

Alexandra Agoston Chanel Beauty Bag

For Australian model Alexandra Agoston, true beauty comes from the inside. A runway favourite to Jean Paul Gaultier and Comme des Garçons, Agoston is no stranger to the importance of good skin, building a beauty regime centred around gut health, exercise, sun protection, and rich hydration – courtesy of Chanel's ultra-nourishing Le Lift Créme de Nuit night cream.

The Sydney-born beauty who now calls New York City home juggles an unpredictable schedule, jumping between shoots, locations and teams on a daily basis. Here, Agoston details how she keeps her beauty routine in check, her love for journaling and the importance of 'me' time.

What is your morning beauty routine?

Enjoy bed for as long as I can before getting up, and then a large glass of water with squeezed lemon, taking a moment for myself, I think a beauty routine is about feeling healthy and happy. I take ‘Amazing Grass Green Superfood - detox and digest’ powder with a large glass of water. I try to drink a lot of water in the morning, a great facialist told me to drink my water slower so my body has more time to absorb it. I cleanse my skin with a gentle cream cleanser, and a splash of cold water, I love Costa Brazil face oil, a beautiful natural product I massage into my skin. Most mornings, especially before a shoot I will take a 10 minute stretch on my yoga mat.

What is your night beauty routine?

I always clean my skin before I go to bed, and take off any makeup if I have been on set. I love a rich moisturiser at night. I'm trying a Chanel night cream, Chanel Le Lift Crème de Nuit at the moment, it’s beautiful. My mind is always really awake at night, I like keeping a notebook next to my bed to write down thoughts and ideas. Sleep is the best part of a beauty routine…I love some beauty sleep.

Describe what you do for a living? What does a typical day look like for you?

I’m a model, so there’s no real typical day, each shoot, concept, team, location is always different…it’s exciting to see how different creatives find their process. When I’m not on set I’ll take time for myself at home, I’m working on a series of paintings and line drawings at the moment. I reuse my beauty product containers to mix paint in.

What is the supermarket/ drug store/ chemist beauty product(s) that you use and love?

I moved to Paris to model when I finished high school, I love French pharmacy products especially Embroylisse Creme Concentrate. I also love organic health food supermarkets to find products - raw coconut oil, rose water spray, Aloe vera, probiotics, vitamin e, arnica for bruises, and Weleda Skin Food.

What is your main form of beauty body maintenance? What products do you use on your body?

Eating lots of fruits and vegetables. I try to reduce single use plastic as much as possible, so I’ve switched to using moisturising body wash in a bar form, and I love the Chanel body oil, L’Huile Rose right after a shower that comes in a beautiful glass bottle.

How do you keep fit/ healthy? Does exercise form a large part of your routine?

Feeling fit and healthy is really important to me, I have been doing Pilates for about two and half years with an amazing teacher in New York, Amy Nelms from Flatiron Pilates. I really love it, I was doing a lot more cardio before I started pilates, and feel my body is stronger and more balanced now. Every body is so unique and I think its important to find something that just feels good. I also love dancing around my apartment.

What cosmetic procedures/ professional treatments to you have as part of your beauty routine?

I’m not into any harsh treatments or procedures but I love getting a massage! Lymphatic massage is amazing for circulation. I think allowing your body to relax is important, we hold so much tension in our bodies and face, I try to be conscious of it, take a big deep breath and release some stress. I go to Joanna Czech for a facial in New York and Melanie Grant in Sydney.

What do you do when your body needs to recover?

Sleep.

You’re tired/rundown: what is your beauty hack?

Listen to your body. We live in a very connected world, but I feel we are often not very connected to what our body is telling us. There is so much information about beauty and products but I think the most powerful tool we have is ourselves. If your body is exhausted… drinking water, eating something hearty and healthy with lots of nutrients, talking to someone you love and then falling asleep is the best. If sleep is not an option, and I need to shoot, the best old school Hollywood beauty hack is putting ice cubes on your face, or ice cold water… it reduces inflammation and wakes you up. I like to use two ice cubes and move them around the contours of my face.

What is the one non-negotiable in your beauty routine?

Sun protection.

Do you have a beauty icon? Who are they and why?

All the incredible women in my life, my friends and family.
