Jessica Gomes on cleansing for glowing skin, her L.A. hotspots and enjoying the little things

Jessica Gomes

Jessica Gomes knows good skin. Since she was young she has sat in makeup chairs of some of the best artists in the industry, seen behind the scenes of runway shows and has met with and picked the brains of cosmetic experts.

From there the model went on to create her own line of skincare, Equal Beauty. And knows that for glowing skin cleansing is the most important step. Chanel's cleansing collection is a firm favourite for a deep clean that also hydrates. A simple find from her local markets is on high rotation and her love for rose scented products knows no ends.

Here, Gomes runs us through her morning routine, night routine, how exercise can mean structure classes but also just dancing around the house and the L.A. hotspots that keep her functioning on high.

What is your morning beauty routine?

I cleanse my face with the Chanel Anti-Pollution Cleansing gel. Le Gel which is great because it gives me a second clean but with lots of moisture. Then I use the Chanel Le Gommage Anti-Pollution Exfoliating gel which scrubs my face and gets all the dead skin off. I’m very much into feeling extremely clean. If I have time or if I’m going for a casting or going to work I'll do a mask to prep my skin. And I'll do the Chanel Le Masque Anti-Pollution Vitamin Clay mask. I'll then use a serum added on with some Sun Drops from my facialist. Plus my SPF 50 to add extra protection since it's summer here in L.A.

What is your night beauty routine?

OK so I'll use the Chanel Anti-Pollution Cleansing gel. It's very cooling and relaxing and gives my skin a calm feeling from the day. It's super hydrating and cleans the skin super well without scrubbing it. Then I'll just pop on my Equal Beauty Pure Bamboo Moisture pack which is a game changer. I wake up with extremely glowy and hydrating skin.

Describe what you do for a living? What does a typical day look like for you?

So I am a professional model. Have been doing so since I was 10. So I guess all the things that I do sort of revolve around that in the back of my mind. So I guess making sure I get some sort of exercise or meditation in. Eat as well as I can. Do things that inspire me and open my mind every day.

It's been strange at this time as there's less moving around. This is the longest amount of time I’ve been in LA and not had to get on a plane to do a shoot. So it's been weird but also quite nice. I’ve been reading a lot and just doing really simple mundane things which I rather quite enjoy. Cooking, cleaning, doing the washing, making bits and bobs around the house. Pottering around L.A.. Going for drives and listening to a lot of music. And hanging out with my neighbour and getting to know my home. Hahahaha. It's been actually really lovely. Done some shoots here and there which has been nice. Grocery shopping a lot which I never get to do. I dunno I’ve been waking up late, sleeping a lot. Watching films and funny interviews of artists I love.

What is the supermarket/ drug store/ chemist beauty product(s) that you use and love?

I love this rose water spray that I get from Erewhon Market. It's a hippy one called Heritage Store. I also love Alba Botanic Hawaiian Coconut Clear spray 50 plus body sunscreen. I don’t mind a hippy product.

What is your main form of beauty body maintenance? What products do you use on your body?

I'm into exfoliating gloves. Especially on my legs and butt, and I use Dr Bronner’s Hemp Peppermint body wash which gives you a tingle but I find it very refreshing and has an almost medicinal feeling which I like. Kills the germs. Really loving this other hippy cream I found in Whole Foods. It’s 1000 Roses Body Butter by Andalou Naturals. I love anything with roses. I’ve also been using the Chanel L’Huile Rose Body Massage oil which I have a little bottle of and I don’t want it to run out. But just adore the Chanel Rose Body oil. It’s amazing.

How do you keep fit/ healthy? Does exercise form a large part of your routine?

Yes, I box when I can. I’ve been doing these pilates classes online which have been really good. I stretch and I get outside and walk or hike when I can. I also dance around the house and run up and down my stairs.

What cosmetic procedures/ professional treatments do you have as part of your beauty routine?

Right now hardly any. But I love a good Brazillian wax. I was getting laser hair removal. I also like getting facials but nothing to severe. Dr. Barbara Sturm does a great one and Melanie Grant.

What do you do when your body needs to recover?

Sleep, eat and take it easy. Or I get massages. I was getting lymphatic drainage massages from Flaviana in L.A. She’s amazing and does all the models.

You’re tired/ hungover/ rundown: what is your beauty hack?

Lots of water, take vitamins and sleep. Watch a rom com to make me laugh. Or just have a good cry and eat an in and out burger and I’m good to go.

What is the one non-negotiable in your beauty routine?

SPF 50. It's just the best protection.

Do you have a beauty icon? Who are they and why?

I have a lot but the main ones are Monica Belucci because she’s just so hot and womanly and sexy and everything I love about her exotic beauty. She also just seems really cool, but somehow she makes everything look so sexy and chic. And then I would have to say Kate Moss. She’s my fav supermodel because I like her effortless attitude and she seems like she’s not scared of ageing. She’s lived a full, fun life. I respect that. And she is an incredible model. I like to think I’m a mix of both of them.

What is the best advice on beauty you’ve received?

Beauty shines from within. Tap into that and your body will follow.

What is the best advice on health you’ve received?

Stay away from toxic people and don’t do hard drugs if you can. Everything in moderation.

What is the one product you can’t live without?

Right now and I’m not just saying this because it's my brand but my Moisture Bamboo pack by Equal Beauty is the bomb. It has changed my skin. It's a drink for your skin at night and heals and restores everything. It makes you look so young and youthful when you wake up.
